I made my appt today for my hsg. For it to be covered by insurance I have to go to the radiology center (long story). I'm so nervous. I have read so much about how it is going to be painful and I have a field trip where I will be walking the entire next day. Anyone have any advice or stories? Is it as painful as I have heard?

I am also nervous because if my tubes are blocked than I guess that means surgery? If they are not blocked then why can't we get pregnant? It almost feels like no matter what it is bad news.

It's not painful at all. I was terrified of this test and pushed it off for the longest time. After it was over I felt silly for being scared. The anticipation was worse than the test. Don't be scared, it lasts for 2 minutes and isn't that bad. It felt like intense period cramps for a couple of seconds. Bring a pad with you in case you bleed. I bled for the rest of the day, it wasn't a lot though. You'll be just fine. Don't let what others say scare you, everyone is different.

Thank you. I have been pushing it off too- since September. My doctor finally told me that with the c-section and then an ectopic there is a good possibility of a blocked tube.

I also had mine last month and it went smooth. Don't worry. Just in case take two ibopruphen before the procedure. GL.

Ok, I do not want to scare you but my HSG was painful. It was the wrong time in the month so my cervix was closed so they had to force the catheter through the cervix. Because of the pain I really clamped up so my right tube didn’t let any dye through. I would suggest taking some pain medication and if you can something to calm the nerves like a valium or something like that.

HOWEVER, once it was over I had no cramping and absolutely no pain. I was ready to get up and go that day so I wouldn't be worried about tomorrow at all. You may need a pad the next day in case there is some blood or dye but you should be fine.

Good luck!

Take some pain drugs if your nervous, I didn't find it bad at all and whenever I see these threads there's usually one or two horror stories out of 20+ normal experiences.

I took a pain killer and I don't know if you've ever done pilates but if you know the yoga/pilates deep breathing, whenever I get into a pinch where I'm uncomfortable, I start focussing on my deep breathing. Do audible long deep breaths, I don't care who hears me, when they put IV's in me and can't get a vein because I've had to fast with no water for 24 hours I start zoning in on my happy place and it REALLY helps. Focus your eyes on something and listen to your breath. Once you've done loads of blood work, an HSG you'll one day be at delivery time and that deep breathing again will come in handy. In through nose sharp deep breath and slow out through mouth. whooooooooo

If you are prepared to deliver a baby, you can do this! It's nothing, no sweat, a minor speed bump in the road to success and over in a minute :flower::winkwink:

I took some Advil (Ibuprofen) ahead of the appointment by about 30 minutes. It does hurt for a few seconds...15-30 maybe...but as soon as it was over, I was perfectly fine. I drove myself there and home.

The Saline Ultrasound I had done later was MUCH worse since they had to take multiple individual pictures. My HSG was done with a continuous loop, I watched it done, and had it explained by the radiologist while I was there.

Try to calm down and breathe through any pain...lots of very deep breaths. The more tense you are, the more likely it is that a tube will close up. The only time I've heard it hurts significantly is when they have to increase the pressure to clear a tube.

Thank you all. I always compare everything to the rogam (shot for rh-) which is incredibly painful- sort of like the hcg shot but longer. I am not doing the saline so I hope you all are right. When is the wrong time of month? I am having it on day 9

I had mine after I ovulated so my cervix was completely closed. It was like day 24, which they dont normally do but it was the only available day.
They try to do it prior to ovulation.

Hi unfortunately mine was painful but I think this was due to being pent up as they first couldn't find the cervix then couldn't get the catheter through. It was more of an intense pressure. I had taken normal painkillers too. I was fine after just a tiny bit of spotting and a think mild cramps in the evening. We dtd that day as it was close to ov as I ov early and it was fine. Good luck.

Overwhelmed - both of mine were between days 5 and 10. Your cervix is likely opening some at that point.
