HSG - worried about the pain

Ok, I will admit I'm a big wuss.

I have a super sensitive cervix. If OH hits it during DTD it makes me want to curl up and puke. During internal scans I'm in agony, and almost kneed my consultant in the face last week when she just kept pushing & pushing. I didn't mention the pain because I wanted her to be able to get on and do what she had to do but I was so grateful when she stopped as I was just about to tell her I couldn't take any more.

I now have to book in for an HSG as soon as AF arrives. I've been told to take pain killers (and antibiotics, but that's by-the-by) before and after the procedure but I'm really, super scared of the pain.

When they do the procedure, do they pin your legs down? Because if they don't, I'm worried I'm going to kick someone by accident. Has anyone ever had it done under sedation?

Any advice, experiences, etc, would be hugely appreciated. Thanks! :)

:haha::haha::haha:hehe your post has made me laugh!

I had mine done last week - no they don't pin your legs you just have to open them like with a smear and I kept thinking I was going to panic and just want to shut them!

In terms of the pain, it really isn't bad! The worst part for me was when they opened the cervix - which wasn't painful just uncomfortable but I think that's more in your head because you know whats going on rather than the actual feeling of it hurting if you know what I mean? When they put the dye in I got a slight period pain feeling, which must have lasted less than 10 seconds.

Try not to worry too much about it, its over in no time!:winkwink:

I had mine done yesterday and to be honest I was in pain and it is a different pain then your af cramps. it hurt. I wish i would have taken some pain meds before hand. it was a little sore afterwards but not bad. But i bled for about 4 hours afterwards! I hope you do ok through it all maybe mention it to your dr before you go and do it!

Aww hun I was quite scared before my HSG too :flower:

I did take some heavy painkillers about an hour before my appointment but unfortunately it was still very uncomfortable and a tad painful. I just kept telling myself it was for a good cause (the HSG) and tried to breathe my way through it

I had one done last friday. It was very painful for me. I just took tylenol before, should've asked for something stronger. I wasn't prescribed an antibiotic, which makes me a little nervous. But back to the pain.....ouch!!

I had this done a couple of years ago and I have to say that I did find it really uncomfortable. To me, it felt like bad period pains but it literally does only last a few seconds so it's not so bad. I didn't really have any pain afterwards and just had some spotting for a few days afterwards.

Hope it goes ok. I didn't take any painkillers beforehand so might be worth trying x

I was told that I didn't need antibiotics as my swab test came back clear from ever having an STI

Hey,

I did find it painful.. but my friend said she thought it wasnt to bad,, I didn't take painkillers before because I wasnt expecting it to hurt, they had told me I would have a little discomfort.. but then I do find having a smear a bit painful,,, I told the Doctor I was Scared & he did try to reasure me...I didnt have much pain after but did bleed for a few days,,

xx

I had an HSG the other day and really did not find it more uncomfortable then a pap smear. It's a little bit awkward, but if you doctor inserts the dye really slowly then you shouldn't feel much pain at all.

I was really worried because I had read so many horror stories on the net before I went, but I didn't even take any advil and had no cramping at all.

Good luck and don't stress!

Thanks all. I still have some painkillers left from the MC (still in date, don't worry) so I think I'll take those and I'll mention it to the technician who does it.

All my STI results have come back clear but they prescribe antibiotics as standard where I'm being seen, I think because the potential trauma to the uterus/cervix could possibly cause a small open wound where bacteria could get in? Just being doubly safe I guess!

I felt absolutely nothing, I really hope it's as easy for you as it was for me:hugs:

I had a HSG done last cycle. Before my HSG I had VERY regular periods.. This month I started 4 days early and period only lasted 3 days.. Now a week later I'm spotting again. Any similar problems??

I'm afraid of everything too, and was stressing about my HSG the whole month before it! For me, it wasn't bad at all! I think everyone is different! I took 4 advil, and also asked them if I could have something for me nerves. They gave me some valium, and I think that's what helped! It not only relaxes your nerves, but also your muscles. I would definitely ask them if they can prescribe you one pill before the procedure! Good luck!

It's not bad just a tad bit uncomfortable plus I've go a tilted uterus so it was hard to get the dye in and they had to wiggle it around when the dye goes in u can feel it but it's over before u know it. Don't worry couple of pain killers will help! X

Thanks all, appreciate all the responses.

Just waiting for AF to properly start now so I can book in for the HSG.

It's not that bad. A bit crampy. They told me to take Advil before and it helped. Good luck!

Thanks. :)

Booked in for tomorrow. Still spotting but I hope they'll still do it as they close for Easter after tomorrow and due to annual leave wouldn't be able to see me this cycle.

Well, had the HSG on Thursday.

Procedure itself wasn't all that bad, a few short, sharp stabbing feelings and just a pressured, "full" feeling by the end. I got to watch the xray images on the screen was they were doing it, very interesting! Helped distract me, too.

About 3 hours afterwards I started getting pains in my abdomen which lasted until this morning, when I woke up finally feeling a lot better. A couple of stabby pains throughout the day but nothing like it was.

Also had a TERRIBLE stomach ache but that may be because I took Diclofenac instead of ibuprofen as it's stronger, before the procedure. I've got problems with stomach acid, weak patches in the stomach lining & hiatus hernia so it's likely that that caused it. However, most of the pain was along the bottom wall of my stomach, so it could just be that I was very sensitive to the dye and it irritated the tissue there.

Either way, I feel fine by today with only minimal spotting. Think it's stimulated my uterus a bit as I had EWCM (albeit still slightly tinged with old blood) this morning and it's only CD10. :)
