Hi everyone

For the ladies who have had an HSG, how painful is it? What about afterwards during the rest of that day?

Thanks xx

I had done HSG test to check my tubes, don't worry about the procedure. Its not painful but little uncomfortable. I was walking little slowly after the test besides that nothing major.

Thank you! I was getting a bit concerned as they told me to take the day off work.

I had an HSG done last November and it was fine. It was a bit uncomfortable, especially when they started injecting the dye, but other than that, no problems. Although remember to take a pantyliner with you since you may spot a bit afterwards (plus the small amount of dye they can't get out will be coming out for a few hours).

If you're afraid of pain, take a painkiller 1 hour or so before.

I do suggest taking the painkiller an hour before.

In my experience there was a few times, about 30 seconds each, that (to be perfectly honest) was more than just uncomfortable. It hurt. In my case they had a hard time getting the catheter in. But it was NOTHING like what I read about before going in. At all.

The dye going in was uncomfortable, but nothing huge.

The relief was INSTANT once they were done. Maybe like... super mild cramping for a bit after, but honestly, probably only when I thought about it. But certainly absolutely no PAIN at all once it was over.

Great advice from Kat to bring a pantyliner.... I hadn't thought of that and had to get a pad from the tech. lol.

Just in case it's helpful, here's what will happen, logistically (at least, for me it was, and a few others I've talked to as well):

They will have you on a regular x-ray table, you know, the just regular hard, flat kind. You'll lay near the end, knees up, butt down at the very bottom (some people had stirrup things, I didn't). They catheterize you (this part was painful for me, to be PERFECTLY honest. but nothing intolerable for short periods of time). With catheter in, you have to scoot up the x-ray table to the center. (this part wasn't great, but was more unpleasant than painful). Then the shoot the dye through. (this was a bit crampy, but no biggie)

Most people I've talked to have been able to see the screen (if you tweak your neck) while it happens, which I enjoyed.

good luck! Sometimes people get pregnant RIGHT after an HSG (I'm proof!!! Got my BFP a few weeks later!!!!

My experience was extreme but I blame my Dr. He used the wrong tube, did it on the wrong day of my cycle and was overal the worst. I am sure you will have the normal experience, but you need to be prepared that it will be painful from start to finish.

Goodluck

Thanks ladies, that's put my mind at ease a little. I worry slightly more because it once took 10 different doctors to find my cervix for a smear so it can be a bit painful while they are pushing and prodding to find it haha. Hopefully it plays nicely on Tuesday and is easily found.

Oh no myshelsong, what stage of your cycle was it? I really hope you recovered quick from the trauma of yours 😞😞

Thank you all for your help. I had my HSG this morning and after 50 mins of trying, they decided to give up. They couldn't get the catheter in the right place so couldn't get the dye in. I now have to wait 2 weeks for my appointment and then find out what the next step is. The nurse on the phone at the clinic thinks it will be a larascopy 😞 Sitting here gutted that that's another cycle gone and I am no further, with probably another month where I will be told I have to refrain from sex or use condoms so I don't get pregnant 😞

Sorry, I'm throwing myself a little pity party tonight before getting back to myself tomorrow xx

Ugh, that sounds SO frustrating. Sorry to hear that. AND you have to wait TWO WEEKS for an appointment???? That sounds horrible!!! Are you able to talk to someone on the phone from your office before that??

Sorry you're in that place, I think you deserve the pity party.

But always try have in the back of your mind that as painful and at times mentally torturous as the throws of testing is, it's part of the journey to take steps in the right direction. Even when it doesn't feel like it.

But that doesn't mean you don't deserve to feel down!!

:hugs:

You have made me feel so much better with your comment, thank you so much 😘
