'hungry baby' milk at a week old!?!?

She asked if it was safe. It is. What is the problem?

It is suitable for children from birth, but contains casein protein that is harder for the baby to digest. Normal newborns should be fed on demand which would be 8-12 times per day. Trying to use a formula that is harder for baby to digest because you don't want to feed baby frequently is, in my opinion, selfish. Regular formula has a whey to protein ration that is more like breastmilk. Everything is not about simple convenience.

I gave my LO hungry baby at about 8 days old and got told off by HV. it does say from birth (thats why I thought it was ok) but it has empty calories and just bloats them apparently. I'm attempting to try him on it after I finish this box of formula as he is getting extremely greedy, taking 5 oz at his normal times (4 hourly) but recently I've had to give him 3 oz in between, hes putting on half a pund a week and getting really rounda nd fat lol, I'm scared he's going to get obese :-/

Your baby is not fat or greedy.

They have growth spurts, it's normal for them to up their milk. They are growing very fast.

my baby has been putting on a pound a fortnight since birth, I thought that was a good weight gain?
also 5oz every 4 hours is barely anything compared to some babies. when mine was on expressed milk in early days he was eating 5oz every 2 hours.

My LO is taking around 5oz every 3/4 hours and she is only 3 weeks old! She is taking even more at the minute but the HV thinks she is having a growth spurt as did the same last week and gained 11oz between weigh ins, 8 days apart. I can't wait to get her weighed again on Tuesday to see how much she had put on this week!! Love my little chunk x

Depending on how old your LO is it sounds about right 5oz every 4 hours  mine used to take 5oz every 3 hours and now takes 6oz every 3 hours [we're now weaning so he doesn't have as many bottles] But he was on 5oz for a good few months, from about 2months to 5 months, minus when growth spurting and he'd have more :haha: dw about your LO getting chunky, they tend to get chunky then it all sheds once they start moving about more, my LO certainly looks less chunky and more slender now he's rolling about and trying his hardest to crawl  unless your HV or doctor have concerns about your LO being over-weight don't be too concerned, last time my LO was weighed was at 4 months and he was 17lb 15oz :flower:

I have actually never seen it here but I don't think it sounds ideal... what's wrong with normal formula at that tiny age?

I put my little man on hungry baby milk this week, purely because he wasn't settling on the first milk. It just wasn't enough for him. If she's only putting her LO on the next milk to space his feeds out a bit then she's likely to be disappointed. My little man has been wanting feeds every 2 hours since birth. The difference is he took more of the first milk (like 5/6oz per feed) compared to the usual 3/4oz he takes of the hungry baby milk. So even though he's on the 2nd stage milk he still wants feeding at the same intervals!

thanks everyone for the input on my post - I'm still learning these things. my LO is 8 weeks and was just worried as people are saying to me 'wow my bay's 5 months and only weighs 13 pounds' but my OH's sister has a 18 month old and hes huge I just dont want him getting huge. but yeah he's not moving around much atm so I guess it makes sense that when he can do more things he'll shed some weight :)

Same here :haha:

My baby used to put a pound and a bit on every 2 weeks that's how it is until they're older

Regarding the original post though I can't see how a consistent feeding pattern would be established at a week old  I may be wrong but at only a week home (won't say a week old as he was still in NICU at that age) I still didn't know what kind of baby he was be it "hungry" or not hungry. 2 or 3 weeks in yeah but not 1 week old.

Each to their own though, I suppose.

A 7 day old demanding to be fed every 2 hours! Outrageous.

Seriously I have to wonder if people think they're bringing home a human or a plastic doll from the hospital, there are no words.

Tbh u cant really say anything as its the brands that says FROM BIRTH a new mum is obviously going to trust it and use it from birth but yeah newborns are hungry and need feeding a lot my lo fed every 2 hours at that age.

Is this safe??? My friends doing it apparently, because the baby is demanding to be fed every 2 hours at night (I'm actually jealous, my LO wanted fed every 30-60 mins at night!
I don't know much about formulas but is it safe!? I can't find much info via google....and she's not the type to think about looking up info either...

A week old baby is supposed to eat every 2-3 hours! That's the size of their tiny tummies. Can you suggest she ask her pediatrician who will hopefully tell her her baby is being normal?

Alex is nine months old and 26lbs. He's a long baby.

To the PP that said she's worried her baby will be obese, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't listen to people about that :hugs: Babies need that extra fat because they cannot fully regulate their temperature yet! It goes when they start moving, but it's perfectly healthy.

As to the OP, I agree. Filling your baby with empty calories is wrong and it's normal for babies to eat that often. I agree with Aliss. What do people think they are bringing home? A toy? :dohh:

I think she's quite lucky that her one week old wants feeding every 2 hours or so... there's been many a nights when I've fed Maci every 30 minutes to 1 hour!

I suppose it is suitable seeing as it does say from birth but I don't think she is doing it for the right reasons, and yes she is being selfish for the reasons she is using. Why try to 'fill' your baby up for your own convenience? I'd LOVE for Maci to feed every 4 hours regularly and consistently but I wouldn't dream of attempting to 'make' her do so just because it'd be easier for me! Shame on your friend!...
