Hi all

About 3-4 weeks ago now my LO started waking in the night again, on and off... for the last 2-weeks he has been waking in the night twice for a feed. We've agreed with our HV to give him another week or so to see if maybe its a HUGE growth spurt as apparantely they have one at my son's age (17 weeks now, 4 months). She recommended trying Hungry Baby Milk for a few days which we will probably start tomorrow or Thursday when his regular milk has run out!

I tried making up one bottle of HBM my normal way, adding the powder into a bottle of cooled boiled water, then heating up... but it took ages for the powder to dissolved and created masses of air bubbles from all the shaking! So I gather we must make up the bottles of HBM from fresh is that right? I don't mind making it up with boiled water and then cooling it down to the right temp for my LO to drink... but do I REALLY have to leave the boiled water to cool for 30-mins before I then cool it to a drinking temp???

Any other hints on making up HBM???

Also, am I right in thinking its not a thicker milk? It seemed to come through his teats ok. He's on Dr Brown's level 3 teats.

Thank you so much!

HBM works by turning into a cottage cheese type consistency in baby's tummy, making it harder for their systems to digest. Harry was on it for a while and had quite a few problems and the dietician took him off it. She actually said that most dieticians felt that it shouldn't even be on the market.

Anyway - a bit off subject there. When we made Harry's bottles up, we'd put the water in all his bottles and then would keep one bottle of water in the warmer until we were ready to use it - so it was just warm.. and we'd make it up then. But then that's because Harry likes his bottles warm and won't drink them cold. I've never tried making them up cold so can't help with that i'm afraid.

hey hun

try warming the water first and then adding the powder.. it works better...

i dont think the hungry milk is thicker.. i think thts the comfort milk..

luisa kept bringing tht milk back up so we ended up weaning

hate getting up in the night again its a killer!!!

ooh you've got me worried! My HV actually recommended Hungry baby milk. I thought it filled babies up for longer because it contains more casein (cow's milk protein)

My HV recommended it for Toby too! But after reading this and googling I am seriously concerned! LOL To be honest, we tried him on a few cartons for his evening feeds, but it made no difference to his night waking, so the HV said try it all day. We are trying it to put off weaning early. Anyway, I don't have a lot of confidence it will work but we'll see... it could still be a growth spurt and one night he sleeps thru again and we think he's over it, but then he wakes again the next night! Babies! LOL

Thanks all xxxxxxxxx

We had Harry on it for a long time. Harry doesn't drink much milk and I stupidly thought that by putting him on HBM, what little milk he did drink would fill him up for longer. Not a good idea!

It might be ok to give to baby for their bedtime feed? I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't give it to your baby - i'm simply relaying what the dietician told us about how it works and her views on it. Harry is now back on Stage 1 easy-digest milk again.

That's really our plan, because T has stopped drinking a lot (yesterday 23ozs, lowest for AGES!) we thought it would fill him up more? But I didn't realise there weren't anymore calories in it. hmmm what to do? I think I will stick him on it today and see how he goes (incidentally after his first feed today he puked...) we are due to see HV again tomorrow for a progress report...

Thanks so much everyone, Joo xxx
