I'm gunning for a HB this time after the baby removal I had (thankfully hubby is on board up to a point) but it's a VBAC so there's doubt if it'll be allowed (fingers crossed).

I want to prepare this time, I want no NEED to do this I need to push and get through it without a drip, epi, spinal and morphine I cannot stand the idea of going to hospital not only because of the shocking lack of care I got but my hubby hates hospitals and gets far too squeamish over medical stuff hence why I went to theatre alone (git).

I'd love to do a hypnobirthing course to give me a better arsenal of coping mechanisms but its just sooo expensive!! Where the heck am I supposed to find £350 when I have a baby on the way!!

Any suggestions for good books/tapes I could use to get the jist of it?

Hi

I used the CD by Maggie Howell (https://www.natalhypnotherapy.co.uk/). Not sure what the book is like, but perhaps that's an option too? Do you have anywhere near you that does pregnancy yoga? I did it for about 5 months and the teacher was brilliant. I used all the breathing and relaxing techniques that she taught me ("If your jaw is relaxed, then your pelvis is relaxed" is the one sentence I remember her telling us and I kept thinking it during my labour!!). I had a drug free, lovely experience. It's all mind over matter in my eyes, so just read up as much as you can and see if you can learn some relaxation and focussing techniques. xxx

Ergh £9 a class for yoga!!

The room only cost £20 an hour to hire what a gip.

I got this book after been recommended it https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hypnobirthing-Natural-Approach-Comfortable-Birthing/dp/0757302661 - the CD is amazing! I'm still working through the book but it's been brilliant so far. I'm not doing classes either - I'd rather spend the money elsewhere!

I know I'd find them useful and worthwhile I just cant justify the money, although I dont think hubby would think it's worth while he's a very its all black and white kinda guy and this would seema bit mumbo jumbo to him. lol

Mind you I'm totally surprised he's advocating a homebirth at all if I'm allowed!

Thanks for the suggestions ladies.

Although the classes are more beneficial, stats show if you just use the books and cds, rates of intervention are still alot lower than using no type of hypnobirthing at all. We might have to go down this route too, because we don't have that amount of cash available for classes.

I got one of the Maggie Howell CDs too just the single CD but you can buy a course of 6 or more disc from Amazon. I was in my hospital and they are doing 6 yoga classes for late pregnancy for only £32, I'm defo signing up. Check with your hospital they might not run the courses there but might know of somewhere affordable close by.

This is the same book I used with my first one. As for delivering natural after a C-section, it can be done and as long as you have no other issues from the C-section or medical issues it is safe aswell. If the doctor is against it and you have the ability 'shop around' and find one who respect your wishes.

Hi

That is right, we were told that as too.

Also during our HB class (and I'm not sure if it was in the book) we covered some simple massages that your partner could do to help you stay relaxed.

We used the health in preghnancy grant to pay towards ours. The techniques learnt can be used in other potential areas of stress too.

It was definitely worth the money to me

I did the course and found it invaluable, but I agree, can be an expense. The Mary Mongam book underpinned the course, so it's worth getting to read as you'll have the same grounding and understanding of how best to prepare your mind and body for labour. Here is a link for amazon, some sellers apear to have this book in stock (with CD) for £4! Not bad! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hypnobirthing-Natural-Approach-Comfortable-Birthing/dp/0757302661

Read what you said about being unsure if you'll be permitted to have a VBAC. Just wanted to but in and say it is YOUR choice. Some dr's can be pushy to try and control the birth experience. These sites can offer advice and support https://vbac.org.uk https://childbirth.org/section/VBACindex.html https://ican-online.org

I know of a day course held in London that is £99 if that helps - could you use your HIP grant towards it?

If you want the details let me know

I did the class and found it very beneficial! It is worth checking to see if they have a sliding scale/if you can make some sort of arrangement. I was able to do my class for 1/2 price, as I made a deal with the instructor and traded some work. I know that many of the instructors are passionate about what they do, and are willing to work with you - maybe worth a try?
