I can't tell if my babys umbilical cord fell off or got rubbed off. It came off when she was 5 days old, and now at 8 days it looks like this... https://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d114/NoodlezRoom/IMG_20121116_131001.jpg

It doesn't stink, it is "spotting" blood, and there isn't any puss. Is this normal? She has a drs apt on the 24th, but i am not sure of this is something i should make an apt for sooner . my mom thinks it looks normal, but her last baby was 21 years ago so she doesnt really remember.

Looks like it got rubbed off to me. As long as it isn't oozing or puffy I wouldn't worry. Just keep it clean and dry and an eye on it :)

My LO's never looked like that but it didnt fall off til day 9 or 10 and was literally dangling by a thread for a few days so was totally dried up. I'd bet there are lots of people here who will have a similar experience to u though. Hope u get some better help, didnt want to R&R x

Keelans looked like that for about a week after it fell off. Mw said it was totally normal!

it looks like rubbed off to me,when my lo umbilical cord fell off it didn't look anything like that it was dry and it looked healed

That's how my little one's looked when it fell off at 9 days old. Doctor said it was perfectly normal, and to keep cleaning it with alcohol. She had a scab like that for about a week after and then the scab fell off while I was cleaning it. Her belly button looks perfect now =)

That's exactly what my lo's looked like, midwife said totally normal and to leave it alone. Now he's three Weeks it's completely healed.

LOs scabbed like that too. His outer part wasn't raised like that but everyones belly buttons are different. My 7yo dds bellybutton looked exactly like that (maybe a bit bigger though) and she now has an outtie. no need to worry. Unless it starts to bulge, turn red, smell, or pus up it should be just fine (bulging would be an umbilical hernia)

=) Thanks everyone, I am just watching it closely. They told me when I left the hospital to not alcohol it anymore as they are coming away from that. I swabbed it today though. It still looks the same, doesn't smell, and I haven't noticed any blood spotting so I am assuming it is okay. I still haven't bathed her, and wont until I make sure everything is okay with her belly.

Our LOs looked exactly like that. The stump fell off at 7 days and it took another 7 for everything else to go. We were told to clean it every day with warm water, and that it was okay to bathe him. We did and had no issues.

My little girl's looked very similar to that. I just used to clean the dry blood away at nappy changes and folded the top of the nappy back. I was a bit worried too and told OH if it didnt settle i was taking her to the doctor but this week at the 3 week point or there about its settled and doesnt seem to bleed anymore. Good luck xxx

It looks rubbed-off to me..! My DD has her last attached skin rubbed off or peel on its own on the 6th day and I was really worried even if it is small because it was my first baby and I don't know anything about it but my sis say it is ok,..but still I'm still worried that blood will come running out of it...:winkwink:..lol

Anyway, Your are right don't put an alcohol..according to nursing school alcohol cooks the wound when it's fresh so I don't pour alcohol plus it will surely hurt and We would not want to hurt our little baby. Right? Though, you can already use alcohol to cleanse the dried part of the wound and water or pour water for the fresh part. On my DD, I will let her navel exposed or no cover so the wound will be "air dry" and it is effective, in a few days the wound is already healed.:happydance:

Totally normal. My Lo's looked like that too. You just need to clean it daily with cotton wool and cooled boiled water. I bet it will all be gone with in a week x

Our daughter's stump fell off at about day 13 and it had a scab left like this. The scab fell off but another one has since formed- the HV thought it looked fine though.

Looks just like my LOs, i wouldnt worry if it was rubbed off, as when i had my LO's heel prick test done, it was nearly off and the doctor just twisted it untill it fell off, wont be long and it'll be cleared, just clean it with warm water and cotton wool x
