as you may have read i didn't have a good experience at my first IVF appointment :( ... i really would like to change consultants after the experience i had with him, i found him very insensitive and didn't feel assured by him at all :( i was just wondering if anyone knows i can change as i phoned IVF wales and spoke to the receptionist who said i had to do what my consultant says basically and i have to have a scan by student doctors at his practice, i mean dont get me wrong u have to learn somewhere but i really dont feel comfortable with this and neither does DH i am feeling so crappy at the moment and really thinking of giving it all up now i cant cope anymore i dont want this to be the centre of my life all the time its too heartbreaking it really is :(
thanks for reading and any advice in advance xx

If its NHS funded I would just be grateful I am getting it free.

Whats wrong with student doctors anyway? If you weren't told they were students you wouldn't know the difference.

I am being grateful i have had a very bad experience with the NHS since the loss of my twins and im at the end of my teather being pushed around by them all the time. i did say its nothing to do with the students i know they have to learn somewhere but i feel uncomfortable with it, the drs no this throught my depressiopn and anxiety attacks, i have an issue with trust with Drs

I thought that you had to give your permission to be treated by Student Dr's? Whenever I have been to hosp and for treatment they have always asked me if it was ok?

I would try again and see if you can change consultants, you have to be comfortable with whoever is treating you, especially when it is so sensitive. Maybe ask if there is a complaints procedure if they refuse you again? May make them do something?

They should if they are aware of your history and the fact that it may make you poorly.

Good luck and I hope it all works out

You can see how hard it is for t'elle to make this post, I think maybe you should have worded your reply a bit better as it sounds like your digging at her and she doesnt need that she needs support

Thats a bit insensitive dont you think? shes obviously had a bad time.. i no what its like 2 have dr's who wont listen all she wants is a dr that understands.. its not about being grateful.

I would speak to your Dr and explain.
From how I have read your post you have 2 issues?
1) the insensitive consultant
2) students doing the scan

For the former I'd def speak up and say something, Dr's do have bad days and he\she might be better next time, but its best to voice your concerns. You deserve a Dr who will listen to you and try to put you and your partner at ease.

For the latter I would perhaps look at it from a different perspective ... one of my all time best mates is training at the mo (nearly finished .. and ain't she glad!) and you do have to give your permission to be treated by a student (although it may be different with scans) but, anyway, my point, because she is training she is actually more likely to take extra time, double check, have better bedside manner etc .. so don't rule out students .. sometimes they will actually do a better job as they cannot afford to get it wrong, cannot afford a complaint etc
I had a student for my recent scan, and she couldn't have been more thorough, she actually took more time to listen to me and offer advice then my normal Dr!

I like your spin on the student doctors Farie - I hadn't ever thought of it like that but it does make sense.

If its NHS funded I would just be grateful I am getting it free.

I couldn't disagree more - The NHS is hardly free - it's funded by the taxes and national insurance that we all pay. Infertility is a medical condition like any other and those of us that are in this boat should not have to feel 'grateful' that we are getting treatment.

T'elle - good luck. I know it's not easy standing up for yourself in front of insensitive docs, especially with something as sensitive as this - when it happens to me I just want to curl up and cry - but it sounds like you really need to let them know how you feel and how this might affect you.

T'elle, I totally know how it feels to lose your trust in doctors.

Perhaps the receptionist isn't the best one to talk to about changing consultants. Is there a practise manager or someone you could ask? There must be other consultants there you could see, even if it means waiting a little while longer.

Keep fighting, the stress of going through all of this is enough without the added pressure of not being happy with your doctor.

:hugs:

I totally understand where you are coming from. This is a horrible enough situation without your consultant adding to the pain. I wonder if your GP would be able to give you advice on how to change if you rang them? Also, I think I read your post about your original appointment and did someone mention a different consultant at the same hospital? I wonder if you could request to see them instead?

As for the students, Farie makes a good point but if you are not comfortable with it you shouldn't have to have a student. Would it make a difference if the student was supervised by a qualified person? Might be worth asking the question if it would.

Wishing you the very best. I hope you don't let one horrid consultant put you off. :hugs:

Thinking of you... dont forget how important your feelings are in all of this. If it dosent feel right than you should speak up (or get someone else to say something on your behalf) xx

Hi hun :) ignore that completely insensitive comment!

I personally have a hard time speaking up to doctors etc, but if he's been rude and not nice then please say something. Like the girls said ask to speak to the manager and make your feelings known. Just because its on the NHS doesnt mean you can be treated like crap. And no I wouldn't allow student doctors in with me, but thats just my opinion. I realise everyone has to learn but not with me! Thinking of you :hug:xxx
