My daughter started school in august, kindergarten. They started her on letters recognition and reading. I got a letter in the mail that they want me to work with her because she was tested today and she is incredibly behind in all of that! I am no teacher, so I am not entirely sure how to help her. I made flash cards of the words they are learning, but she cant even tell me letters unless they are off pages (papers) that the teacher gives her. I have come to realize that she isn't remembering the words she is remembering the sequence of things. They had a book that she brought home with the colors and she went through those thing faster then lightning but when I mixed them up she couldn't do a single one, same with the little sentence books she brings home, she doesn't even have to look at them, she just has it memorized. Any help would be great.. I cant get her to concentrate when she is home, she just whines at me.

This sound like my ds1. He also remembers story books word for word but can't actually read them. He just has no interest in learning the alphabet and it's a struggle get him to concentrate for more than a few minutes. Maybe I am not the best person to give any advice lol! Here are some of the things we have been trying.

I bought a 'my first scrabble' which helps a bit as its more fun.

We have a range of work books (where they have to write letters, link words to pictures etc) and the jolly phonics book.

We also try to focus on one letter a week. We go through magazines and toy catalogues and find pictures starting with that letter and cut and stick them on a big sheet of paper.

I Hope that helps x

Hi I am a teacher, though not in the US! It's essential that your daughter learn the letter sounds and then letter blends and not just the letter names in order to 'word build' that is to say p-a-t pat, m-a-t mat, th-e-n then. many kids learn things off by heart and it's good you've picked this up and have been testing her by mixing up words. at least you know she has a good memory! Children also learn graphically, that is to say by the shape words make.

Starting school is incredibly tiring for kids. Just being in a room with 20-30 other kids takes a lot out of them. Even my "big kids" are exhausted for the 1st month or so until they get into the rhythm of the school year. I wouldn't do anything that requires her to sit and concentrate. That will just frustrate both of you.

"Letter hunts" are a good way to practice letter recognition as you two go about your day. Start with the first letter of her name (since that is probably her favorite letter and the one she's most likely to be interested in finding) and as you drive around or at dinner or reading books together ask her to find all the letter ____ she can find.

When she is solid with the alphabet you can move on to doing "word hunts".

Oh thank you for the links, I think they will be great. I can use these as rewards, which I think will help her remember, because of all the confidence and being proud of herself!

Also try the A.J.JENKING https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saF3-f0XWAY you can watch together learn phonics first, then use these https://www.youtube.com/user/KidsTV123?feature=watch u can mail order cheap to, my lo isnt even 2 yet and knows them all, its is realy educational. We sing this all the time even at bath time, and bed time, lots of fun, were doing shapes and colours to

what about a leapfrog reading system to.

I find as hard as you try at home, they pick up much more/take more notice of the teacher.Learning the sounds such as 'th' 'sh' 'gr' etc then adding different endings can be a good way to learn them to read the whole word rather than just guessing from memory.

I would say that anything you do do with her needs to be fun rather than learning otherwise she won't want to do it.

One thing we were recommended to do was to make a matching pairs game with a few words. When Daniel was in reception year last year they had about 4 or 5 'words of the week' so we used these words. From memory they were 'in' 'on' 'of' 'go' and 'me'. To start off with we worked on him recognising that two words were the same and i would tell them what they were. Then i started asking him what the words were. As the tiles were put down randomly he wasn't able to memorise the word due to it's place on the page.
