Ok, so like every obsessed pregnant lady out there I couldn't help trying to find my uterus. I have been reading up on all sorts of website and looking over internal diagrams as well as pelvic muscle and bone diagrams (I am a bit of a science geek). It took me a while, but I think I found it...which is a little scary, because you're not supposed to find it till 12 weeks.

However I started showing last week and had a hunch that 1. I'm further along than I thought (very unlikely as DH and I used protection the month before and I had a normal LMP) or 2. there's more than one baby in there or 3. there's one really big baby in there. 2 or 3 are most likely I think (I'm hoping it's just one big baby!)

So back to my uterus. I tried many ways of finding it and eventually found that standing up is the easiest way. Doctors find it when you're laying down, but they have to dig really deep to find it. I'm too chicken to poke that far. I read that this is because your uterus can sort of sink down because of gravity when lying on your back. Apparently if you're really skinny it's easier to find laying down.

So standing up I found the edge of my public bone and pressed upwards and found a very hard blob (almost felt like bone!) that goes up about 4 cm and then my stomach goes relatively soft again above that.

At first I thought it was some sort of muscle that was tensed when I was standing, but I couldn't find any muscles in that area on any diagram.

The first one is not during pregnancy, the second is during pregnancy.

It seems to me that above your pubic bone things should feel relatively soft, unless your uterus is large enough to be there. I sure wished I had checked when I was earlier in my pregnancy to confirm.

Those of you who are very early in pregnancy, is there a hard spot above your pelvic bone or is it soft?

Those of you who are over 12 weeks, does my description sound right to you?

See now here is another person making me think Im probably the 13 weeks not 7....
I can definately feel 'bump' ie hardness above pubic bone when stood up, belly fat gets in the way a little so cant really see where it goes too. When I lie down I can still find it and would say it coincides with the "3rd month" line on the diagram (roughly!!)
See if Im told Im seven Im going to be rather nervous that there is more than one in there esp as twins do run in the family!

could be your bowel hun! after i had katie and my womb was going down, they were sometimes unsure whether it was my womb or my bowel xx

LOL Jenni, both. My father was a twin and my mother had twin brothers ;) No twins in OHs family though so maybe I will get away with it this pg too....
I have discovered I am a very impatient person at times, not my best quality!

^^ it runs on the mothers side and tis only non-identical twins that are hereditary. to do with how many eggs you release!!

i was convinved i was having twins, there's 13 sets of non-identical twins on my mums side - mum and her sister are the only identical! and 3 sets of triplets!!

There's only one set of twins in my family that I know of. My mom had fraternal twins when she was 21. I'm 24 and having a similar pregnancy as my mom's twin pregnancy so far (according to her). My mom hopes it's not twins (me too!). She says she wouldn't wish a twin pregnancy on me. It was really rough in the later months she says.

My first pregnancy was twins, which resulted in me losing one of them, yet the other went on to full term, and I now have a lovely 3 yr old boy...however...I'm supposed to be 6 weeks or so...yet I can feel my uterus fairly high too...Twins run in both sides, mine and dp's families have history of it

Hmmmmmmmmmmm....got a scan in a week....gona find out I think! Whoops!

twins are on my mums side ,but i still had no idea i was having my boys not a single symptom .It can be tough ,im only 5ft so was hugh by 33 weeks when i had them ,but its a wonderful thing to have twins and see the amazing bond they have .

on the feeling the uterus thing i am 5 weeks and when i press above my pubic bone it is hard , but i had a c-section and am wondering if that could be scaring or i am doing it wrong , fun though xx

No idea as to whether its the scarring or not...might be but I'd ask midwife if I were you...I'm finding out about scans on Monday because I'm a high risk case and going to have to be scanned frequently, plus those lovely people at the hospital who know I hate needles might have to do a full body CT scan on me to make sure I've not got any blood clots they are unaware of...fun fun!

Thank you for all your responses. So only two of you actually said you tried to feel for your uterus and you both say it was hard above your public bone? Hmmm, maybe it is a muscle or something. I would love to know more. I know piles of people are viewing this thread without responding - please give it a try! Maybe I should make it a poll? I don't even know how to do that.

Na mine is hard further up than just above my pubic bone...I'm going to ask my Dr lol

Mine's hard above the public bone as well. I'm right at the 12 week mark though so I don't know if that helps at all?

I haven't felt for mine, but I was at the MW this week at 15wees and mine is just above my belly button.

I'm 11+5 and I've been trying to feel for mine - it does feel hard above the pubic bone, but not like "the edge of a tennis ball" or "the moon rising" as I've heard it described! It's more like a ridgy, lumpy mass that spreads across my lower abdomen. So I don't know whether this is it or not - it kind of just feels like muscle underneath the padding! Which has come as a surprise to me as I haven't done a sit-up in about 2 years! I first tried feeling for it at about 8 weeks, and now can't work out if it feels bigger and harder now than it did then.

DH says it definitely feels harder than normal like something is in there - but I don't know how he knows as I don't ever remember him feeling my lower abdomen in my pre-pregnancy days...

So anyway I'm very interested in others' replies to this thread too, as I have no idea whether I've found my uterus, some unexpected muscles, another organ or a big hernia.
My stomach kind of gets softer higher up towards my belly button

I can't find mine, but also I don't really know what I'm looking for. I have an appt. at 12+6, so I'm going to ask the OB then.

that is a fab picture thanks for posting it i can never find a decnet one of where my uterus is

I can feel something hard but I think it might be my bowel! I'm intrigued too though!
