Hi Ladies,

I was 2cm dilated last Thursday and had a membrane swipe, nothing happened really so today I went back and my cervix is closed :dohh: I was going in for my 2nd swipe. I am very surprised and never heard of this before, the doctor was kinda if in a rush, but did put me on the induction list due to swelling and my blood pressure was a lil high 140/90.

Anyone have this happen to them?!? Thanks ladies!:hugs:

I heard effacement can change depending on position and pressure baby puts on cervix, but there is NO way your cervix can un dialate!! I sometimes wonder about how these drs make it through school! What a quack

When I was 40+2 with my ds I was 4cm at the drs office but by the time I got to L&D for an emergency induction I had closed up to 2cm...I think its a defense mechanism your body does when it senses any kind of danger

Yes it. Can happen. I was 2 cm at 24 weeks pre term labor. And my cervix was short. Its super thick now I'm not dialated anymore

Thanks ladies, I have been spotting since 2am so we will see...

i thought you had to have a 2nd sweep 48 hours after the first one? thats what i was told in antenatal on tuesday!! i didnt think it could close either?!

I asked my midwife this because I was at a 1 and was super excited to be dilating and she said that you can reverse effacement and get thick again after you've thinned out, but she's never seen or heard of anyone UN-dilating and that it can't happen. That being said, I've had friends tell me they have had that happen too, so I don't know if she was just telling me this to ease my mind or what. Also, The only other thing I could think possibly happened, was that it could be a difference in opinion on whoever checked your dilation. Like maybe the person who said you were a 2 was not right in the first place? not sure, if it was different people doing the check, that's where you could get different measurements cause it's not like they go in there with a ruler lol

Yes, it is possible for the cervix to close back up again, even while in labour. It's not particularly common but I've known a couple of people it happened to and also seen it mentioned here before a few times. I'm quite surprised doctors would be so adament it couldn't happen as it obviously can..

Different people could probably come up with different measurements but I'd imagine closed vs 2cm would be a fairly obvious difference?

That still doesnt make sense. If a cervix can "close up" again, then why do they get so concerned when non term woman starts to dilate? And if stress and fear can cause the cervix to close, wouldnt the drs then encourage a woman who is dilating to stress out to "reverse' the process???......I can see if two different people check you having slight variations in their measurements, but I still dont think the cervix can "close" until after delivery!

And also why wouldnt they teach you that? I went to school for nursing and was NEVER told anything this crazy
