Hi ladies,

I'm a ftm to a 6 weeks old :-) well today she has slept a lot am I need for a long night??

Any replies would be greatly appreciated xx

def not. newborn babies sleep a lot in the early weeks, and sometimes sleep all day as well as all night. they only way to know is to find out by putting lo to bed. less sleep in the day can actually make it more difficult for baby to have a good sleep as they become overtired and difficult to resettle if they wake up x

Nope! 6 week growth spurt can be a super duper sleepy baby before they feed and feed and feed. Also, a well rested baby will sleep better than an overtired baby. It is very hard to have a baby sleep too much in the day at that age. They really have (as an average) an ideal wake time of an hour to two hours sleep if you're on a three hour feeding routine. (I did EASY if you can't tell ;))

No it's the other way around actually.... less daytime naps = worse nights....

Sleep breads sleep.....

Thanks ladies x just another question at what age will it become a problem? X

Yep sleep defo breads sleep! I honestly worried about this too but Fter 14 weeks of various sleeping patterns I fully agree  he sleeps sooooo much better at night if he has slept more in the day :)

Hope you have a good night x

It young babies- sleepy days mean good sleep nights, too. It's not till they get older that excessive sleep dueing the day effects nights. I can't remember exactly when that usually changes, though. Maybe 5 months or so?

Nope. You want your 6 week old to sleep a lot all the time, day or night.

It's rare for a baby to ever be able to sleep too much during the day, so it really won't ever be a problem. Up to about 3-4 months, they should be sleeping at least 5-6 hours a day. And around 6 ish months, at least 3-4 hours a day. 6 week olds are very sleepy! My daughter was pretty much only waking to eat and otherwise sleeping all day. It changes a lot after 3 months, so enjoy it while you can and do some things for yourself while you still have a chance. Even at 6 months, she still sleeps probably 5 hours a day and still sleeps well at night.

In my experience, yes. I've noticed that my 7 week old daughter will eat a lot more during the night if she's slept all day. Lately, she has been sleeping longer at night & I am constantly nursing her during the day to the point where my nipples are hurting.

Not necessarily. I've always heard that sleep breeds sleep!

Definitely not.

If a baby does not sleep during the day, they will become overtired and then an absolute nightmare to put down and stay down.

Even at nearly 8 months, my LO needs about 18 hours sleep per day. Most need about 14-15, but if he doesn't nap well during the day, night time is a nightmare.
