I am new to the forums and got my BFP last Saturday (my birthday). I started bleeding on Tuesday, visited the doctor on Wednesday, kept bleeding until Friday, saw the doctor again and she said it is likely I am miscarrying. She ordered me to have a scan but the nurse from the scan unit said it is too early to scan (5 weeks, almost 6). Instead, I had a blood test today, Friday to check my levels. How will they know if I have miscarried or had an ectopic? Why can't they just do a scan? I am very scared, still bleeding, and having some cramps. This is my first pregnancy and I'm not sure what is happening.

i have heard of hcg levels being checke every 72 hrs but i am not sure how that works apart from that just have to wait for the scan i really do know how frustrating an scary it is to have to wait but it could be normal some people do bleed through pregnancy i dont wanna get your hopes up just take care honey!

Sorry to hear you're going through this, It's not very nice and there is a lot of ladies here that will be able to give you some good information.
I mc a couple of weeks ago at 5wks. I went to the early preg unit at my local hospital and they did an internal scan and took bloods. I'm not sure where you are but I live in London and they were happy to do the scan for me. Is there another hospital near that you can go to for a scan?
Hope you get some answers soon.

Perhaps because you are bleeding and its early they didnt want to do a trans-vaginal scan and your too early to see abdominally. When do you get the blood tests results?
If not i would suggest contacting the early pregnancy unit again. Express your anxiety and ask if there is any way for a scan tomorrow. Just keep resting as much as possible and try to keep calm.
I know just how scared you are as i felt this too this week when started bleeding. Please try and rest and push for a scan if you are not happy

From my understanding, they check the hcg levels in the blood to see if there is an increase of at least 60% over 48 hours or so. If there is, then pregnancy looks good. If there's not, or the increase is smaller, then this may be an early indication that there may be an issue. After the blood tests they may want to scan if the results are inconclusive. Have they given you a date for another blood test early next week?
The difficulty is though that everyone is different and there is no 'textbook' answer at this early stage.
I've just been through a similar thing so if you want to chat, please get in touch.

I also had an appointment at my local EPU and was told there was no point in a scan due to how early on in the pregnancy i was (5 weeks exactly that day) So all they did was take a history of what had been happening and then said they'd like me to do a urine sample and take some bloods. They tested the urine there and then and got a
so said obviously my body already recognised it wasn't pregnant anymore and that combined with the pain and heavy bleeding they said i had naturally miscarried and that was that 
I have heard that some women do have bleeding in the early stages of pregnancy and do not miscarry and are able to carry the baby to term, so i think sadly it can be one of those things where everyone is so different. I just wanted to share my experience with you having just been through it myself. For me as well, this was my 1st pregnancy and the mc came as a real shock, having only just found out i was pregnant. This site has been a huge support along with my OH.

Oh hun, I am so so so sorry. I know exactly what you are going through and the lack of information makes it even more horrendous.
This sounds like what happened to me so let me explain as much as I can:
They can't see anything on a scan before 6 weeks. And even at 6-8 weeks it can be inconclusive as you may well see a sac and not a heartbeat which tells you nothing.
Your blood tests will measure the level of HCG in your blood. That's the pregnany hormone and it is this that is picked up in a Home Pregnancy Test. When you are pregnant your HCG levels double every 24-48 hours. If the pregnancy is not going to continue then the levels do not increase, they either stay the same or drop.
In my case I demanded the blood tests because they wanted me to wait two weeks for a scan. I also was bleeding from Tuesday to Friday and then it restarted the following week as well. In my case my first HCG result came back at 585. Tells a story that I remember the number so well. In my heart I knew the pregnancy was over 585 at nearly 7 weeks wasn't a good sign. It's cruel hun but not knowing is crueller. They will test your bloods every 2 days or so until they are sure the HCG is declining as expected and the miscarriage is 'normal' (sorry, it sounds awful). In my case my HCG fell so slowly that they considered me high risk for an ectopic (the hcg almost flatlining suggested there was still tissue left over)
For me it was a long and mentally sore process but it wasn't physically painful. i didn't need painkillers or anything. But I had to ask after those first few days should I stay lying down or do I just get on with things. I was told that if I stayed lying down then yes the blood flow would slow or stop but really I was only giving myself false hope. If you are m/c'ing then there is truly nothing you can do to stop it.
I hope you are not m/c'ing hun and you're HCG indicates all is well, but I hope this info helps you a little. For me it was tnot knowing what to expect that scared me more than anything.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I should know the results of my blood work on Monday and my doctor said I would have another blood test next week. I will have to wait and see what my levels are doing and if it is needed, I will push for a scan later.
Unfortunately, I am one of those people with tricky veins! It took two different women three tries to take some blood. I am not looking forward to being stuck again but I am desperate for answers!

I am deeply sorry for you news and i had miscarried after 12 weeks going through the same emotions and i feel for you as the unknown part is mental torture. My youngest sister who is only 17 is currently in the same situation as you and has a scan booked for Monday, i have tried to be supportive as i can understand how you feel with confusion and a sense of loss as she is too.
My advice to you is to take care, try to listen to your body as it generally has a way of telling you even though mentally we don't want to accept the truth due to the pain of acceptance. I really feel for you, wish that knowledge was more advanced within early pregnancy so you could be reassured and know where you stand.
Takecare of yourself, time does help heal and my fingers are crossed for you.
