I am querying this as DS was different I went in for induction appt in labour and was 5cm so they just broke my waters. Went for sweep on Thurs I am 1cm but consultant still asked if I'm happy to have 1 prostin? Can they not just break your waters if your dilated even just 1cm?
X

They were able to break mine at 1 cm. Cant say i felt anything but it was quite bloody which makes me think they nicked me when they did.

bearing in mind though, i'd had 3 pesseries and it took 24 hours to bring cervix forward and get me dilated to 1 cm. Waters were broken and drip put in back of my hand at this point to speed things up. They might break waters if u request they try that first x

I was induced with both mine by having waters broken first, u just have to b slightly open so then can fit the stick in. That was 2 years ago, dont know if things have changed x

When I was induced with my DS almost 9 years ago, I went in to induction at 1cm dilated. It took a good 2-3 days of getting pessaries, prostin, etc and was STILL only 1-1.5cm dilated. It was then they said they were going to take me to the delivery suite to try and break my waters as all other forms of induction had failed. She did warn me that as I was only 1cm dilated she may not be able to do it. In the end, she did manage but it took her a good 10 minutes. I think they prefer to use other forms of induction first as breaking waters don't guarantee that it will put you in to labour. I think they will only break waters as a last resort. Your best off speaking with your consultant and getting his opinion on it!

I was induced with my son and after 2 pessaries I was only 1cm open. They wouldn't even attempt to break my waters at that point. I had a 3rd pessery overnight and I was only just 2cm but they managed to break them. If I was still 1cm, it would have been a c-section for me as that was classed as a failed induction in my hospital

I only got to 1cm after two days of induction, three midwives tried and failed to break my waters at 1cm,the pain was awful.I ended up having a c section after failed induction.I agree with PP that different hospitals have different policies.
They might be more inclined to do it as its not your first baby
:dust:

I think it could be to do with the thickness aswell. If you are only 1cm them chances are you are still thick. The pessary not only dialates but thins your cervix. With my induction they gave me the pessary at 1 cm which got me to 2-3cm and then they broke my waters

Great thanks ladies. I did think as much. Trying to avoid any hormone filled medical intervention and just have waters broke but looks like they will prob try to get me a bit further I have 11 days yet that gym ball is going to take a hammering this week x

You are trying for a vbac right? I was vbac too last May. You have lots of time still... I had a sweep 40+2 and was very high and posterior and just 1cm. Then had a sweep 40+5 and was 2-3cm and thin. He was born vaginally 36 hours later! So don't get worried yet. I was certain I'd end up induced but went into labour at home at 40+6 and got the whole crazy drive to the hospital! Good luck

I was induced, had to have 2 of the pessary things before my waters could be broken at 2cm.
