Seems carobel isnt having the effect on the acid so gonna have to stick with Gaviscon - Doc suggested giving half a sachet in each bottle so to reduce constipation issues. Will it have the same effect as a full sachet though?? She has to have it in every bottle xx

you could try it, not sure it will have the full effect. My doctor prescribed me some medication to help Daisy go toilet x

Thanks hun - i got prescribed some lactulose for her but dont like having to give one to counteract the effects of the other feel like I'm pumping her full of meds! Will try half a sachet in her next feed then xx

Her prescription is for one sachet hun and each single sachet says one dose so two sachets would be 2 doses - he suggested half a sachet but dint do a blimmin thing!

Ness just a thought - what formula is she on? Poppy has gaviscon with regular cow and gate and all is well, we did start using the gaviscon with comfort milk but this caused too much contstipation. I may be clutching at straws here........ lol

Hope u find a solution. xx

Is it for reflux? If so you might be better treating the excess acid? Either Ranitadene or omeprazol would help, and no constipation.

Hi hun,

We got given gaviscon for Ava-Mae's reflux, however it made her so constipated. Like you we were given lactulose. Like you I didn't want to be pumping her full of medicine. But I read up on lactulose and it doesn't seem too mediciney (if you knw what I mean!)

"How does it work?

Lactugal solution contains the active ingredient lactulose, which is a type of medicine called an osmotic laxative.

In treating constipation lactulose works by increasing the water content and volume of the stools in the bowel, making them softer and easier to pass. Lactulose is made up of sugar molecules and is broken down by the bacteria that live in the lower part of the gut. This leads to the contents of the gut becoming more acidic, which reduces the absorption of a chemical called ammonia. The presence of ammonia in the gut causes water to be drawn into the lower bowel. This increases the amount of water in the stools, softening them and making them easier to pass, thus relieving constipation. It can take up to 48 hours for the lactulose to have an effect"

It really does work. It stopped Ava-Mae's poos being as small and hard as marbles!

In the end though we took her off the gaviscon. She didn't have severe reflux and I didn't think the benefits of gaviscon were worth the constipation.

I'm not sure if half a sachet would work though as I think at your LO's age (also depending on her weight) the dosage should be 2 sachets (although I am not 100%)

xx

She definitely needs two sachets but she hasnt poo'd really and is straining! Lactulose draws water from the intestines though and can dehydrate them if used too often as she wont drink juice or water I'm reluctant to keep giving it to her :( xx

Its definitely acid thats causing pain - I asked the doctor if there was anything else he could prescribe he said no! Just prescribed some more bloody gaviscon! I'll keep using one sachet and see how often she poos and what the poos like but think I'll ask for ranitidine she seems happy enough though most of the time though is straining to poo. I think the carobel is better for sicky babies whereas its the acid thats the problem for her xx

Evans poo was never the same again after I upped him to 2 sachets after 5 days of no poo I had an emnergency trip to drs to get some lactulose which worked fine. I stuck to one sachet via sringe every 4 hours and that seemed to work better than giving it every feed (fed on demand when bfing)

Persist with the water or juice and keep an eye on her soft spot which will go sunken if shes dehydrated x x

Thanks honey she's had two poos today, but she still wont take juice or water shes taking plenty of milk so not too concerned but her poo was really green and slightly thicker than a paste. She seems to feed better with the carobel but I think its cos she needs 2 sachets of gaviscon really but just darent give her it so want to try and get away with just one. She fusses a bit at first with gaviscon but not with carobel maybe cos its thick straightaway x
