Hi I just wondered if anyone has any experience of infant gaviscon, and it not working as well as it did at first. My LO was put on it around 2 weeks ago for silent reflux, and what a change we had... but the last few days i just dont think its working as well.
He projectile vomited 3 nights ago (he did this now and then before on the gaviscon) and he's starting to get the horrible sound back in his throat (like he has phlemgh) he's spitting again quite regularly and taking a long time to settle before we can lay him down, he's also crying for a bottle around an hour after each other (he was constantly wanting bottle before) and he's crying a lot again after feeding.. nothing like he was before may I add but Im scared of it slowly getting back that way! anyway I had him to the doctors again on Monday and the doc said that he thinks it will just be time for his stomach muscles to strengthen and he doesn't think he needs anything strong, to keep him upright at least an hour after feeds and really just stick at it!
Any advice or experience on this x

My dr put LO on meds right away for her silent reflux and she is completely fine now. She is on Ranitidine. She takes it 0.6 mls twice daily. I would ask your dr about it or maybe get a second opinon? I know they like to try the gaviscon first before meds, but my dr doesn't like it because of constilpation issues and she does not feel like it works well enough. I love love love my dr, she is really great! Good luck keep me posted.....

I did think I loed my doctor he has been ace and sorted Blake out at his second visit (first he was fast asleep so didn;t hear the screams) second he did and he gave me gaviscon right away, then rang me twice that week to check. I was really dissapointed with him on Monday, he even started asking me how I was coping and how me and my partner were getting on through all this WTF? I politely said that I was fine and that why I wasn't there about me I was there about my son... I think I was a bit taken back by this and maybe its why I didn't argue his case enough.

hmmmm, sounds like he "was" interested in getting your LO well, but not so much anymore. I've found that alot of dr's are just so busy and overloaded with patients and they just don't take the time with their patients anymore. My dr and the nurses actually send me and OH to lunch (they close for their lunch at 12) and babysit LO at the office everytime we go for our visit. We don't or haven't ever had babysitters and i don't get out to much with LO and had a hard time with baby blues, etc... and they love Lily, so they make OH and i go get a bite, so we just run down the street and grab a bite for an hour and go back and pick her up. Its pretty unbelieveable.. I would definitely get a second opinon. Its horrible when they are suffering and they don't have to be!!! I hate when LO is in any kind of pain.... So i can understand how you are feeling.. Get that second opinon.. Or call back dr and tell him you want LO on meds!

Oh thats so lovely :) your very lucky to have such a nice practice xx i'll be ringing in the morning, i've come to bed ready for the night cries but all I can hear is his dad trying to comfort him :( its awful xx

Do they need to increase the dose? Gaviscon worked for us for a week as well, then it went back to constant screaming so we got ranitidine and it worked like a dream.

That was the first thing I asked but he said we're using it maximum we can in 24 hours. Awful awful night last night with his reflux and constipation! Seems thats all its doing for him now :( can a doc just prescribe that or were you referred xx

we had gaviscon and it worked wonderfully along with a change in milk for the first 2 weeks... we were advised by hv to give a small amount of water to help with constipation... however after 2 weeks it became more and more difficult to feed him again and he was screaming at the start of each feed before finally taking the milk. i went back to docs and asked for something stronger (hv suggested to ask for omneprazole) and have now been prescibed ranitidine and domperidone, was also advised to keep up with the gaviscon as well. he has been on them since monday so not sure if there has been any change yet, we did have 2 great feeds yesterday though, not so great this morning again so will just wait and see over enxt few days...
i would suggest you go back and say its not working and ask for ranitidine by name... hv said gps are reluctant to prescribe due to expensive but if you have asked for drug by name it is harder to fob you off...

I've spoken to my health visitor and have been told to go back and ask for that ranitidine, however they had no appointments left today so the gp who seen him last is ringning me back this morning. My health visitor said to tell them shes been and seen him And says he needs this and to cross everything as they have giving it out :( I really hope I can have it xx

Hi Itchycoo.. I just wanted to see if you were able to get on the meds? I hope so!! I said a little prayer for you. Let me know when you have a chance..

Hugs

gaviscon stopped working for lola twice so yesterday she got put on ranitidine 0.5mls 3 xs a day so hopefully this will do the trick now xx

My doc prescribed ranitidine.

Thats awesome!!! Has it been working for your LO? It can take a while sometimes to start working when you first get on it. And we make sure to give LO her two doses atleast an hour before a feed because it takes 15-30 mins to get into the system...:hugs:

That is great.. Just give it some time to get into her system. It can take a few days before you see any difference. Or sometimes you can see it right away. It does take 15-30 mins to get into her system, so if you give it to her before a feed, do it about an hour before if possible.

:hugs:

feeding is instantly better since her first dose (third in total) this morning.she has just woke up screaming tho and now i dont know weather its the medicine giving her tummy ache or if its just coincidence and shes teething as today shes really been biting her hands (and mine) so i rubbed some gel on her gum and cuddled her with her tummy tightly up against me and shes dropped of so it could b either lol

also the dr said to me "three times a day if needed" so if i gave her just 2 and see how we get on do u think that would b ok? xx

Yes, i think that would be fine. As long as she is getting some doses in her system to control the acid in her tummy, she should be fine. She may not need the 3 doses. I'm so happy this is working for you, isn't reflux the worst??? Ahhhhh, its been so hard, but also so rewarding when you see her giggle and smile and feeling better! That makes me very happy! Good luck! Keep me posted. :hugs:

Thanks Hun,I think I'll try that first of all then with just two doses and up it if I need to.it's definitely the worst thing coz u can see they want their food but can't without screaming  we just had another feed and she was smiling and cooing away through it like her old self,it was amazing.we did have a little bit of milk come back up but she still didn't seem bothered so I'm happy xx

That is so awesome!! And yes Lily still has her milk come back up now and again, not often, but yes, it doesn't affect her in the slightest. I just hated the gagging and the pain i just new she was in from the acid coming up, it just killed me.... Lily only takes the two doses a day, by the way and she is a severe case, so i bet your lo will only need the two doses. Talk to you soon!
