OK - I decided to start a new thread so this didnt get lost in my other one about the HCG count.

I had a scan at 4 weeks 5 days earlier this week (see my previous thread https://www.babyandbump.com/pregnancy-first-trimester/20630-hcg-ok.html )and I wondered if you could give me your opinion. :help:

On the scan notes it starts :

'Enlarged Uterus. A 0.5cm diameter intrauterine cycstic area is noted ? containing a tiny yolk sac, too early to see FH or fetal pole.'
Can anyone shed any light on why they would put a '?' and is the 'intrauterine cycstic area' the gestational sac??

Is anyone familiar with the jargon??

I wish I'd asked more questions. I also wished they had never given me the damn notes so I couldnt read them 17 times per hour.....

My hubby says I need to stop 'googling and obsessing'......if only it were that easy.... :sad1:

HI sorry i cant help with the translating thingy but i had a early scan i must have bn bout 5/6week and they could only see the sac.. was told to come bout in 2 weeks(the longest 2 weeks ever) and when i went back i was a bout 7 and a half weeks and they saw the baby and the heartbeat.. not sure if that helps at all... Im now 19+6!

Thank you soooo much. I really appreciate your reassurance. :hugs:

I no what the waitin is like ive got a dd and had 2 miscarriages last year so every little pain i get im on the phone to the hosp.. when i went 4 the first scan they even did an internal to see if they cud see better but they cudnt so i stil had 2 wait the 2 weeks.. and when i went back they found it straight away apparently they dont like to scan u b4 7 weeks cos they often cant pic nethin up b4 that..dunno bout u but the m/w near me dont really explain stuff properly..:hugs:

i'm gonna ring the midwife when she's at my practice on tuesday and try to find out some more. The hospital recommended a follow up scan in 2 to 3 weeks so hopefully that will show more as yours did.

Well, enlarged uterus is good, that happens when you are pregnant.

As for the other bits, no idea.

Thanks hun - I'm hoping that we might have a midwife/sonographer amongst us!!! :laugh2:

At 5/6 weeks I didn't have a fetal pole or anything, just a sac. At 7/8 weeks my little girl (bean at the time) was on the screen with a heartbeat! :)

I think that what they mean about the tiny yolk sac & too early to see fetal pole is that there is a sac in there but it is too early to see anything bec u r only in ur 5th week. Usually the fetus and heartbeat starts showing from 6w and above.

I think that everything is normal with u, so u shouldn't worry. Enjoy being pregnant!

Thanks Suzan. :hugs:
I thought I'd stop disecting and analysing things once I got that BFP but I still find myself doing it. I'm going to try to now.

At your gestation, the only thing to be seen is a tiny gestational sac, you WOULD NOT yet be able to see a baby or fetal pole or fetal heartbeat. I had a scan just over 5 weeks and only the tiniest of gestational sacs could be seen. I assume the question mark by "'intrauterine cycstic area" is basically saying they presume a gestational sac but won't confirm it at this point as the fetal pole has not yet been observed, so at present its a questionable Cystic area. Presumably this is just the Sonographer being non commital - I wouldn't worry about it.

This is a scan at 5.5 weeks, where no fetal pole was seen:

So far everything is normal for your gestation, so try not to worry too much!

-At your next scan you will find that once the fetal pole or HB has been observed, there will be no question marks, just a confimed pregnancy!

Thanks sooo much Rach! The scan showed a 'black hole' and she pointed out a small bump sort of attached to it and said that was the yolk sac - very similar to the pic in the link.

Yes, the yolk sac is whats attached to the baby nourishing it - so hopefully by the next scan you will see the tiny baby with the yolk sac attached, the sac usually looks like a little halo attached to baby.
It all sounds normal for your stage.
