Hi

My son Liam will be 7 weeks old on Saturday. We started him on Aptamil 1 and when he was 2 weeks old he had diarrhoea and we ended up in A&E. After this he started to become really uncomfortable quite often throughout the day - his face going bright red, arching his back & bringing his knees up, grunting, writhing around and passing alot of wind. He also only did one poo a day which was very explosive (it quite often shot 2 foot across the room & I was constantly covered in it!)
I took him to the doctor who gave him Colief and Infacol as he suggested he could be lactose intolerant. This didn't work so he was then taken off both of these and put on Aptamil Easy Digest with gripe water. Still no improvement, so 2/3 weeks ago they put him on Cow & Gate Infasoy as apparently the bug he had at 2 weeks irritated his bowel making him intolerant to cows milk protein. He has been better on the Infasoy, he now has firmish poos (but still only once a day or longer) but still has quite a few hours in the day where he is grunting and uncomfortable and passing alot of wind. He is also very sick on the Infasoy compared to Aptamil (both kinds).
When I went back to the doctor he said the soy milk was the last resort, there's nothing more they can do and he will just have to get used to it.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? Do you think it's likely that he could have an intolerance to both kinds of milk proteins? (The Cow and Gate website said that children with cows milk allergies are often allergic to soy milk, but doesn't say anything about having an intolerance.)
Does anybody have any suggestions about what we could try next? It is really upsetting to see the poor thing so uncomfortable.

Sorry this is such an essay!

I don't have experience of anyone having intolerances to both. I had problems with cows milk as a child, as does one of my nephews. My mum told me that I used to have10-20 watery poos per day before my problem was diagnosed.

To be honest, at 7 weeks many of the symptoms you've described are fairly normal - has the doctor done any tests or checks to confirm the intolerances, or looked at one of his poos? I only ask because without this it's really only guess work, and a misdiagnosis is the last thing you want.

I hope you can find a solution that works for you both :hugs:

Both kids are allergic to both cow's milk and soy - we tried Hypoallergenic formula for a while with DD but eventually we had to go on an amino acid based formula. Hypoallergenic the proteins are really broken down but in amino acid based - it's so broken down or not even there.

There IS more you can do - try a hypoallergenic kind - I don't know the British formulas but they have to exist.

I found this:

https://www.aptamil.co.uk/products/article/aptamil-pepti?tr=carousel

You can also check out the formula my daughter is on:

https://elecare.com/

I warn you - this formula is NOT cheap but you may be able to get insurance to cover it or get some sort of assistance.

Your baby does NOT have to suffer because his doctor is unsympathetic. You may have to find a new doctor to get the script. You may have to get a referral for a pediatric G.I - a tummy doctor - who can help work out your son's issues.

Also he may not get used to it - left long enough their intestines can start to bleed and they become anemic from blood loss. I don't want to scare you but your child pooping blood because the doctor is an idiot is not right. My poor son suffered. Thankfully by the time my daughter was born I knew better and we fired that stupid doctor long ago.

go back to a differnt doctor hun and get referred to a dietician.

there IS more that they can do. if some one is allergic or intollerant to something its not a case of "getting used to it" how can he make a baby suffer like that needlessly?

there are many many more things you can try. like mrsrabbit says the hypoallergenic ones are normally the first port of call then if need be the amino acid based ones.

getting onto the dietician will be better now thanb trying to get on later. if there is an allergy or intollerance you need to know what it is so you can avoid foods with it in when weaning and you need the proper tests carried out to find out what to use and aviod.

start a diary with what he drinks, his mood, his nappies and everything then go to the doctor armed with this and refuse to leave without a referal and some other form of milk!

Thanks alot for all your replies!
We had such a bad night that I decided to go back to the hospital this morning - I rang Cow & Gate before I went so I could ask about him possibly having an intolerance to both. Before they even answered my question they said that babies under 6 months old should NOT be put on soy formula, especially boys! They said Aptamil Pepti is the hypoallergenic formula they recommend for babies with a cows milk protein intolerance.
So.. Off I went to the doctors, he was really sympathetic as Liam was having one of his moments (even said I have the patience of a saint). This time he said he doesn't think he has an intolerance to anything in particular, just that he has a hypersensitive bowel & that everything seems to irritate it and is causing colic. He weighed him & he had lost 1lb 3oz in 2 weeks (previously he had been gaining a lb a week). He said the colic is likely to last another 6/7 weeks which wouldn't be a problem if he was still gaining weight!
So I now have been given the Aptamil Pepti (hypoallergenic formula recommended by Cow & Gate) and have to go back to see him Monday - If there is no improvement he is referring Liam to the community paediatrician who will look into it more apparently.
We have fed Liam twice now & he seems quite happy already! Fingers crossed he will feel much better soon & we can stop worrying so much! (I know colic is common but I'm sure every new mum panics about these things).
By the way MrsRabbit - Childrens prescriptions are free in the UK (good job as the Aptamil Pepti is £28.48 for 900g!) Just for the comparison, Cow & Gate Infasoy that he was on previously is £7.34 for 900g)

Thanks again for your replies

so glad you got something for him!!

i did wonder about the doctor giving your son soy but i wasnt too sure. i know they say not to give it to girls under 6 months but i was unsure about boys.

fingers crossed the new milk helps and you and your son can get a well dewserved break from the colic!

I had read a few things myself about levels of oestrogen & aluminium but assumed the doctor wouldn't have given it me if there was a problem - I'm so glad I spoke to cow & gate!

I also had a message from the doctor this morning saying that they've found out the scales were wrong & not to worry about the weight loss over the weekend as he's probably fine & he'll weigh him Monday. Makes me feel a bit better!

Thanks for all your kind words, I always used Baby & Bump whilst pregnant to read about various things but never posted myself - I shouldve done it sooner!

Connor has a cows milk protein allergy and to soy. Even after lots of pestering the doctor and peadiatrician we didnt find out until he was 4 months old. Connor is on neocate and we use this in his food aswell, they didnt try him with soy until he was a year old but that didnt go down well and he has a soy intollerence. They have said they will try him with soy again at 18 months and if he still cant tolerate it he will go on a more advanced neocate for 18 months plus

That sounds really nice. Our insurance is better than most but I know mothers buying formula on eBay because only 8-9 states legally make the insurance cover special formula.

A formula switch can take 2 weeks...the old formula to get out of their systems and the new one to take over. With DD I swore it wasn't working because she got worse and I had other moms assure me it takes time and sure enough.

Once I found what was bothering my kids and got it dealt with the 'colic' magically disappeared. I hope your son gets a break soon.

ive got the same prolem with my lil boy an i spent 5 hours in the a&e last nite to wht they said is they need samples of his poo an said he had reflux when i asked about he milk the just shrugged an walked away :( so when i was in boots today i bought Cow & Gate Infasoy aswell now readin this thread am wondering should i give hiim it ( mj did have routa virus when he was 9 days old) ahhhh am so confused now wht should i do pls healp before i change his feeds 2mora

Just wondering why not soy formula before 6 months, especially in boys?

its to do with the oestrogen levels. not sure what it does coz my son's allergy didnt appear till after he turned 1 so never had this problem.

its not recommended in girls either coz it causes heavy and painful periods (which i know only too well!! my mums milk totally dried up at 6 weeks and i have a cows milk allergy too so i have been on soya all my life and suffered so bad!!)

Soy has a estrogen like chemical -- some women take it to help with TTC or Menopause.

Many people don't take intolerance seriously. Maybe on Monday call and see if you can have the baby's regular doctor test for blood - it's a symptom of milk allergy\intolerance.

I would go and see your doctor before you change his milk, we checked with ours even just to change from Aptamil 1st milk to Aptamil Comfort. He said at the time that it sounded like a good milk so perhaps you could give that a go before switching completely over from cows milk. (the protein in the comfort milk is partially broken down so is easier to digest & has half the lactose of the normal aptamil) It didn't help us much but I've heard really good reviews about it! Cow & Gate and Farleys also do one.

I didn't know about the heavy and painful periods in girls but in boys it can cause fertility problems later in life apparently

Thanks for that - I wasn't sure how long it would take & have started panicking as all he has done since last night is sleep (he doesn't sleep alot in the day usually but could possibly be because he's more settled?) and when he's awake he is windy and upset! Hopefully he will be ok once it gets into his system.

He is also chewing on his hands and anything he can get into his mouth (even his bath towel & my t-shirt, and just chews his dummy & bottle without sucking it) does anyone have any ideas what that could be? Asked the dr and he said babies don't teethe until about 9 months so can't be that! Might actually start another thread somewhere else about it.

Chewing on things doesn't necessarily mean anything. It can be a sign of teething, and the signs can start at around 2 months, although the teeth generally appear nearer to 6 months. Some babies like chewing things, some like pulling, some like scratching, and some (like my LO), like doing all three!

Glad to hear things might be looking up on the feeding front

Thank god for that! Would rather get the colic out of the way before the teething nightmare starts!
