No it doesn't have to be confusing, but it also doesn't have to follow the schedule in the guide above.
I agree with the readiness signs, and would add that being able to grab objects and move them to the mouth is one that was missed off. In the UK, guidelines have changed and introducing one food at a time is no longer the advice. Yes you can do it (if you have family food allergies etc.) but you don't have to. Experimentation is valued over control.
My LO has eaten pretty much everything in that article before she was 7 months old. At 9 months old her favourite meal is lentil/chicken/spinach indian curry!
Our ped gave us permission at our 4 month appt (which was really 4.5) to start solids. He also said a "certain order" was not necessary and untrue. Its also best to introduce things like peanut butter whenever you choose. The guidelines are no longer "wait until this age". Be careful if food allergies are prevalent on momma though. But if not, you can introduce things like peanut butter whenever you choose.
