Yesterday my oh had to give Lucas a bottle of aptimel formula (ready mixed in carton) as I was a bridesmaid so I was out of house from 8am and didn't see them until 1.30pm and I hadn't been able to express enough milk.

My oh said he took the formula no problems so that is good but I am not planning on introducing it on a regular basis for a couple of months yet but I was wondering if every now and again we need to give him FF is that ok or it should it begiven on a regular basis not given here and there iykwim ?

Also is formula milk supposed to smell ? Its smells so rough ! Yuk

BTW If anyone is ever thinking of being a bridesmaid and breastfeeding......don't do it, complete nightmare !!!!!

If you do it every now and again on a 'random' basis, your supply shoudnt be affected :)

im due to get married next month and will be taking a couple of cartons of formula just in case he drinks all ive expressed, as i dont imagine it'll be easy getting in and out the dress to feed him.
ive given him formula once before (doc wrongly told me i couldnt bf on antibiotics, mw told me he was wrong the next day). he would only drink it when i wasnt in room and was a bit sick after (dunno if was cuz we didnt wind him properly or he didnt like it)

if its done every now and again it shouldn't harm your supply. I take it you were uncomfortable for the day

Nothing wrong with giving formula from time to time as needed IMO and IME. And yes, formula STINKS. Breast milk is basically odourless and tastes sweet; it baffles me that something designed to approximate it can smell so disgusting! It must taste good though, babies seem to enjoy it :D

Thanks everyone

Yes i was uncomfortable, my boobs were HUGE as his feed times got all messed up and when i did feed him i had to take my dress off which was a major task, it was like a sprinkler system going off as i had that much milk !!!

My LO takes a formula feed in the evening (SMA) at about 11pm ish and has done since about 3 weeks old (OH wanted to be more involved lol). My supply hasnt changed as yet - but I do get really full in the morning because of that 'missed' feed. He is starting to want alot more lately but is currently on a spurt!

He also has solely formula when grandma has him for the night.

xxxxxx

Ellis has a formula feed after his bath and if I am out and have not got enough EBM (Those cartons are a godsend, I keep some in my changing bag along with some sterile bottles I got in Wilko's just in case!!) It doesn't effect my milk supply as I do it regulary. I did read somewhere that if you stick to the same time fot the feed your boobies adjust.
