Is 5oz too much for my 7 week old?

My son has 5 oz every 4 hours and always seems to struggle afterwards as if it was too much. My problem is when I'm feeding him and he gets to the end he always wants more! I never give him more than this.

I'm curious as he always suffers with wind and seems unsettled after most feeds.

3-4 hours later he is yelling for his feed.

Any ideas? X

Seems about right. Anna went up to 150ml (about 5oz) just after seven weeks, the same time I change her to size 2 teats (changing the teat size helped her to finish her bottles more easily, maybe you could try that?).

Sometimes she drains the bottles, sometimes she only wants half. Sometimes she goes three hours between feeds, sometimes 5 (or during the night sometimes even longer).

If your son is asking for another feed 3-4 hours later, I'd say you're giving a perfect amount. That's how often a baby his age should be drinking. If your baby isn't spitting up, that's not too much. If your baby wants more, sometimes they just want to suckle. I used a pacifier for this, but if you're not using a pacifier, just continue to let your son settle himself down a bit after feedings. Try to keep him in a bit of an upright position after feeding to let the gas rise up and the milk go down. But yeah, he sounds perfect to me! :)

Thanks for your reply :hugs:
Luca has been on 150ml for the past few weeks now, we have bought some size 2 and vary flow teats and it does seem to help. When he uses the size 2 ones he drinks it so fast!!
Most of the time he drains the bottle but sometimes he has about 110-120ml and he seems the same as your little girl sometimes he goes 3 hours but then other times he goes a bit longer.

I noticed your daughter is around the same age as my son, how is she sleeping at night? I'm trying to get Luca in a routine but I'm finding it so hard! He is so unsettled at night it's really hard.

Leeann xx

Yes, he is pretty much like clockwork with his feeds! The last few nights he has even been like this in the nightime. I am feeding him on Aptamil and my other half wants to move him to hungry baby milk which I'm not wanting to do as I have heard there are certain nutrients missing that the baby needs and also it may effect his digestive. Gonna stick on his current stage 1 milk.

I do use a pacifier and most of the time when he is unsettled he spits it out.

After his feeds even of a night time I sit up with him for around 30 mins before putting him down.

Sometimes it can be hours aft his feed and ill take him to change him and he brings a bit of milk up or gets the hiccups.

The health visitor says this is relatively normal xx

We don't really have a routine! But she's started going longer at night. She goes to bed when I do at the moment. Her feed before bedtime will usually last her until around 4am at the moment (ie, if she's had her last feed about 11pm). She'll then spend some time talking to herself before going back to sleep and will then feed again after another 3 or 4 hours or so.

Last night she had her bedtime feed before 11 and didn't wake for the next one till after 5. Amazing! But the habit of now chatting away at 5am can last hours and keeps me awake. D'oh.

Early morning (any time between 5 and 9am) she won't want to settle in her basket so usually sleeps on my chest while I sleep for another few hours.

5oz is fine if he is struggling try burping him half way through the feed then go again

The only thing that I can do right now 2 help him settle for bed is to only put him in his Moses basket at bedtime 2 try and let him know it is bedtime.
Today 4 example he has pretty much been asleep all day. How much does your little girl sleep 4 of a daytime?

I think your little routine is good, I would love Luca 2 be that settled that he chats 2 himself 😊 I think that's so cute.

Thanks for your reply, I do burp him a few times during his feed. Usually around 3 times. Sometimes he brings a lot of wind up and other times hardly any atall xx

I couldn't tell you what she sleeps during the day, it varies so much! I just let her sleep when she wants for as long as she wants. I'll only ever wake her for a feed if I need to have a period between of no feeds for a few hours, ie, if we're going out for the day I'll make sure I feed her before we go out so she will want to sleep and stays full, and same with bedtime.
