Just wondering really as OH has had his through and it really doesnt seem right, he lost his job last may which means in this tax year he only had a wage April and May and i remember in May they totally screwed him and only payed him £400 or something like that, they told him his payslip for that month was in the post along with p45 but he never recieved them, the p60 states that he was payed just over £3000 but no way can that be right, just didnt think your p60 could be wrong. Kx

Yeah that seems a bit odd. A p60 covers your earnings from April (5th i think) till the same the following year so if its from April 09 till April 10 and he lost his job in May then it should only show what he earned from April - May last year. Could he phone his old job at all and ask them to give him a statement of earnings (what you get if you lose your P60) You could also check with the inland revenue.

Thanks, yeah he rung his old work today but the woman who dealt with his wages is off till monday so gonni ring him back then, just dont c how they can get it wrong on a p60 and esp by that much lol Kx

If he didn't work for them at 5th April 2010 he should not have got a p60 from them so it does seem odd.
He could ring his tax office and see if they received there copy of the p45 and ask them to post a statement of earnings out as they can't give you this info over the phone and this will show what was on the p45.
Ask them on Monday why they sent a p60 when apparently they sent a p45 out.

no its because he worked with them during the tax year past so knew he would get the p60 to cover him being there last april-may but just know it shouldnt be so high, might try that and get the p45 and c what it states. Thanks. Kx

If you are given a P45 in any tax year and are out of work when the tax year ends then you do not receive a P60 for that tax year - just the P45. You only receive a P60 if in employment when the tax year ends.

Also because he only worked in Apr & May he is probably due a tax refund for stoppages made against his earnings that year.

is he employed now? coz as others have said he shouldnt have got a P60 if he was unemployed at the end of the tax year (5th April). And he really should have chased his P45 when he lost his job last year!

I would call your local tax office and get them to send him copies and what details they hold on him. I wouldnt say there is much point in trying to get info from his old employer as it was a year ago now and they probably wont appreciate having to dig all the info out when he can just get it from the tax office!!

And yeah, he probably is due a tax rebate!

hope you get it sorted

oh right i c what u mean, no he has only just been set up as self employed on the 2nd May but wasnt working in between then and last May so he shouldnt have got the p60? thats weird how he has got that then? Kx

I would definately contact your tax office then. Because it's starting to sound like his previous employer hasnt taken him off their books properly, if that makes sense?! Does he have proof that he hasnt worked for them since last May? Like an exit letter or anything (would normally get given a letter during his exit interview)?
I cant see why they wouldn't have taken him off, but it may be an admin error somewhere along the line!

yeah i c what u mean, that sound more like it actually and maybe somehow thats where the extra £ is coming in, basically he handed in his notice because they were paying him less and less every month and was getting ridiculous and finished up 29 May as this was pay day and he didnt want to risk leaving before then incase they never paid him if that makes sense and on the last day he got his wage and asked for wage slip and was told it was standard for it to be posted out along with p45 but her never got them, chased it up a couple of times but seeing as he struggled to find somethng else he never desperately needed the p45. He has no real proof he hasnt been working for them other than no wages from them. Would the local tax office be able to tell if he was down as still being employed by them? Thanks for all the advice Kx

Yes because they will hold a part of the P45 he should have got.

The P45 'should' have been sent to the tax office, and they 'should' be able to confirm and send a copy to your OH.

Depending on what tax he suffered during those two months, and what he recieved afterwards (jobseekers etc?) he may be entitled to a refund of the tax he's paid. So long as his total income for the year to 5 April 2010 was less than £6,475.

He'll need to contact the tax office himself, failing that, you state he's now registered as self-employed. If he has an agent (Accountant) the accountant will be able to act on his behalf and sort something like this out fairly easy.

well he contacted his employer who said it was standard for the to send out a p60 to everyone who had earnings from them in that tax year whether still employed or not, they have said they will send out the p45 now. He didnt claim anything (jobseekers etc) afterwards, family have helped out enormously and we have managed so think he may be entitled to a tax refund, gonni try anyway. Thanks Kx
