Is the Mirena Coil causing my symptoms??

I had a Mirena Coil fitted about 5 months ago, and for about 4months now I've been experiencing some horrible symptoms. Im having anxiety like I've never had in my life. I get a tightening and a butterfly type feeling in my chest a lot of the time and find I'm worrying needlessly over some things. Also, Im having IBS symptoms like constipation followed by diarrhoea, extreme bloating (by the end of the day I look 4 months pregnant!), cramps, tender stomach, spotting..... the list goes on!!

The worrying thing is when I had a smear test done 2 weeks ago the nurse couldn't find the coil strings, and the GP who she got in for a 2nd opinion couldn't find them either. They've arranged a scan for me but Ive got to wait 8 weeks!!! Im in quite a bit of discomfort and just want to coil taken out!!

Could my symptoms be the coil??

I suppose that is hard to say until the scan, which i understand is not ideal given the wait it sounds like perhaps the IUD either fell out, or maybe moved somewhere else within your body (the latter would be an extremely rare event though).

Have you taken a pregnancy test recently?

No I havnt taken a pregnancy test, but with all the bleeding (sorry to tmi!) and discomfort since having the coil fitted we've only dtd once in the last 5 months anyway! And that was about 3 months ago so I don't think there's much chance of that.

I've been back to my GP who has request a scan at a different hospital so I should get it in about 2 weeks now so not quite so bad. I am having a period again now which makes me wonder of it has fallen out? But I can't imagine not noticing if it had?

No advise- but big hugs! so sorry you have to wait to know... but hope it's all sorted soon. I would think if it fell out then it couldn't be the cause (but like you said, I can't imagine not knowing if it did???)- I just had mine fitted 3mos back... but if it moved, who knows!??? Our bodies do some crazy things sometimes!!!

Hey I know this is way overdue- but - I have similar symptoms. I bled constantly since I got it fitted in April. I would be good for a few weeks and then bleed for weeks on end.

Apparently now my strings are too long all of the sudden. so I have to get the trimmed. Makes sex really uncomfortable.


I have had bouts of post partum since I had my youngest son 16 months ago. But in the past few months I have developed debilitating depression. That lasts for day, weeks. And then lifts. And just when I think I am doing better, it comes round full circle.

I have had enough and went to the dr thinking it was the iud. He told me it was such small doses of hormomes that it just sounded like I was depressed. He perscribed me Zoloft. I just filled the RX but im nervous about taking it because what if it IS just hormonal??

I don't do well on birth controls- I have had a few that made me just miserable. I thought the IUD would be the best?

I also feel ridiculous fatigued. All the time.

Are you feeling any better????

Hi hun sorry for the late reply, I hope you've had some answers by now. I just wanted to say that I had a nightmare with the mirena as well, it seemed perfect up until I couldn't find the strings, got checked, then sent for scans/x-ray and it had disappeared. It wasn't in my body, and I sure as hell hadn't been aware of it falling out. I was gobsmacked that it could happen but it did. Then there was the resulting pregnancy scare as well. They wanted me to have another mirena, but I don't trust it now! It's so shite because I really suffer with my cycle and need hormonal B/C to control it. I'm back on the Pill now but get awful headaches on the week off. No idea what to do!

Anyway sorry for the hijack just wanted to share that you're not alone x
