to cut a really long story short my son was born at 32 weeks, and was on the neonatal unit for 7 weeks simply because he wouldn't feed..
he was having blue episodes with bradys and desats everytime he was offered milk in a bottle..
through the nasogastric tube he was fine.
we tried gaviscon, ranitidine, domperidone, omeprazole and finally carobel.
nothing worked alone, until we started the carobel which made his milk like ice cream its so thick!
he has had this since leaving the hospital, along with omeprazole that gets put up as he gains weight.
he is now 5 months old, weighing just under 15lbs, but is showing no signs of taking any less carobel!
ive tried making it thinner, he holds his breath and chokes as it comes straight back up into his mouth (I can hear it!) and its heartbreaking to watch.
he now has 3 meals a day, as he was weaned at 3 and a half months under instruction from his paediatrician. porridge or cereal at breakfast, pureed veg for lunch with a baby yogurt and at tea time either a jar of baby food or if what we are eating is suitable we puree some for him too along with a bit of fruit for afterwards.
he is FINE with every bit of food he is given (except anything with rice but that's a different topic)

I was hoping that starting solids would help whatever is in his tummy stay down, and we could start to come off carobel.. but it seems not because literally the second the unthickened formula touches my babies stomach it starts coming back up.. he is NEVER sick, it just comes up into his chest as I can hear it and he fusses so bad!

how am I ever going to wean off carobel? how is my baby ever going to drink water and juice?

I feel like im fighting a losing battle I just don't know what to do!!!
does anyone have any similar experience because I feel so alone

I have no advice as no real experience of this but I just wanted to send you huge hugs. My dd was born at 34 weeks and we struggled with weaning, when she was weaned at 6m. It's not the same as what you're going through, but I remember that feeling of despair that life was never going to get better and we would always battle at mealtimes. It was so stressful. All I can say is that it *will* pass. Your son is still young. I know lots of friends babies who struggled badly with reflux (kind of similar!) - they were at their wits end feeling like their child would never keep food or milk down. But that too of course passed.

Just hang on in there. It will get better. Keep talking to your doctor - maybe get a second opinion of you feel like you're not being taken seriously?

It's great that your son is happy with food btw - one day he will be fully weaned and the worry about getting milk down him will be over. Hold onto that when you're having a bad day!

Huge hugs xx

Ps my food-rejecting baby is now a constantly-eating-toddler! ;-)
