Is this abnormal? Metopic craniosynostosis?

Please can you look at the photos of my 8 month.

Since he was born he's had a bulge in the middle of his head. After googling my sister is worried is is possibly Metopic craniosynostosis which can cause brain damage if untreated.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

It doesn't look out of the ordinary to me. Sophie has very emphasised sutures lines in her skull and also a pronounced brow and ridge up the middle like that and she's perfectly healthy. She had a head injury from a car just after she turned 2 so her head was looked at a lot.

Her head has smoothed out a lot over the last couple of years.

If you're worried then i say mention it to your GP or HV. It might be nothing, but peace of mind is priceless! xx

Thanks very much for your replies.

She is a Ftm and worries incredibly about him.

I do understand her worries but I just don't know what's normal - my son is now 4.5 and I struggle to remember. My nephew is 8 months old and is only just starting to sit up confidently - but he still needs pillows behind him as he can fall over unexpectedly- is this normal?

He can't crawl and doesn't bare any weight on his legs. Is this ok?

Also he has epicanthaL folds on his eyes which can be seen in the photo. I guess this adds to the worry.

One of the main concerns she has is that she didn't discover she was pregnant until 12 weeks and she hadn't recieved the correct prenatal care before then. She's worried she may have caused something.

As a previous poster suggested, it would be best to ask a professional for peace of mind :)

However, I remember when my 6 month old was born I was looking up different forms of craniosyntosis because I thought my son's head looked funny) and I remember that type, but I remember the pictures looking far more extreme than your nephew's ridge. So I really think he will be fine.

The other questions you asked don't seem to be very alarming as every baby hits milestones at their own pace. The only one that made me think it was a little strange was that he doesn't bare any weight on his legs at all... Like, does she ever stand him up and see if he pushes his legs onto her lap? Or has he used a jolly jumper or anything like that just to see if he will bounce with his legs?
I'm definitely not an expert because I am just a ftm to a 6 month old, but he has been using his legs a lot for a long time already so that is the only reason I was a little concerned.

Anyway, a visit to the dr would clear everything up and hopefully give her peace of mind :) good luck!
