Morning all
I am really hacked off. After a ruptured ectopic I have been ttc for 2 years as I have a child the nhs won't pay for us to have ivf so got to go down the private route also we were told i should have my tubes removed prior to ivf to prevent another ectopic, something I really don't want to do. So been reffered to a private clinic and was given forms by nhs to have sperm analysis and fsh and lh bloods done again. The cost of the private consult is £165 anyway the appointment has come through with an added £420 for pre - treatments tests which include sperm analysis, amh for ovarian reserve, ultrasound scan , bloods for HIV , hep B and full blood count and syphillis. Obviously I have had alot of these done and wasn't expected to pay this added cost. We will struggle to pay for one round of ivf never mind this. What do you think can I get these tests on the nhs or will I just have to pay? Or should we just take the consults without these and take all the tests results we have so far? Thanks in advance tanzy x

Hey hun

We had the basic tests done on the NHS - blood work and SA so obviously it was free. When a fertility issue was observed we were then sent to a fertility specialist who has since run their own tests so this would have been an incurred cost if you were private.

You could speak to your GP and see what work they are willing to do - then speak to the FS and see if they will be willing to take the NHS results?

Failing that there are always other routes to help with costs such as donating half of your eggs if they are good quality to another couple during your IVF cycle which often means that your cycle is free?

Good luck x

Thanks Rachelle,
I think eggs share would be out for me , I have tubal issues and one of my ovarys was stitched back up when the ectopic was removed. Also this may sound hard and selfish but if ivf didn't work for me I couldn't cope with the thought of someo e else carrying my child I wod however consider donating my embryos infuture if it does work as I would like help someone else have a child as no one desrves to suffer like us. I bet you are really excited about ur icsi hope it goes well for you. I am just annoyed at having to pay for a package of tests and not just what I need wil see my gp and ask my nhs consultant too they will except my on test results it's just how to get them that's the problem x

i had IVF in May/June. I am having a bit of time off before having it again, probably December/January, and I have been told that I will require the blood tests and OH will require the sperm tests again. They say that the human body changes so regularly that they require an up to date test sample in order to prepare the correct treatment plan. For example, I have a friend who has had IVF, it was male factor. One sperm sample was something like 3% normal. The same test, carried out 3 months later, was 35% normal. Over the course of those three months, THAT is how huge the difference was.

It's expensive, but it's for your benefit. There is no point on them drawing up a treatment plan based on numbers that are no longer accurate. You'd be spending thousands on a treatment that is destined to fail. It'd be better to spend the 400 quid now than waste the 4 grand on severely reduced odds.

The point is my consultant said she would test my hubbies sperm and my fsh & LH 2 weeks ago to take the results with us and I was expecting to pay £165 for a consultation then I get a bill through for £585. I would be happier if I could just pay for tests I need I had a lap and dye in may and have had numerous scans so already know my problems I am happy to pay for the necessary blood tests but this isn't an option. Good luck with ur next ivf where r u having it ?

I've been very lucky so far. I have a private appointment next week and like you, was given a list of tests I would need totalling almost £600! I took a chance and visited my GP and asked her if she could help, and she has done every single test! She had to tell a few fibs to get them done, but she's managed it! I checked with my new clinic to make sure they could be used and they said 'of course'.
I'm aware I may need one or two bloods at the private clinic, but this will probably cost me £30 instead of £600.

It's worth asking a few questions, especially if finances are restricted.

Best of luck x

Hi
Just been on care's website and they offer the screening tests for £105 per person as apposed to £420 for the package. Going to email my consultant and try my gp this week. I don't know about you but I feel like we are going to need a bottom less money bag for this. I am a bit grieved that the reason I am in this situation is that the nhs neglected me and failed to diagnose my ectopic before it ruptured but that's another story x

I know this may sound controversial but I am in a similar position to you, and if my IVF is rejected I am going to seek legal advice against the PCT. Can I ask on what grounds they rejected free IVF? xxx

Hi Crypto
The reason is I already have one child, I am now suffering from secondary infertilty. Also my bmi is 35 so the next thing would have been I need to get it down to 30 which I am working on anyway. Why were u refused ?

Hey Oneday - my BMI was 38 and for NHS treatment i was told to get it down to under 30 - if you pay privately then they aren't as strict but i must say, i feel 200% better for it so glad i have lost weight plus it reduces the miscarriage odds with IVF.

PCTs are supposed to offer several cycles of IUI and 3 free goes at IVF but they don't and it does vary - we get 1 free go and then have to pay 5k for each go thereafter - it's a real postcode lottery.

Definitely speak to your GP and see if he/she can help at all x

I havent been refused yet, but oh has twins by his first wife. I will not accept that as a reason for rejection. I am not quite at that stage but my ectopic was ignored for 4 weeks by the nhs and I nearly died due to their negligence so I will pursue this to the death!

I really don't understand how the could use his children as a reason for rejecting you it is apalling. Sending u a pm as well x

Good News
My consultant on the NHS has agreed to do all the tests for me and prepare my results to take with me. That just leaves my hubby who is off to the gp next week x
