My little girl is only 12 days old and for the last couple of nights she's been unsettled after her bottles. She strains and grunts as though she is trying to force something out but i don't think she is constipated as she has had normal bowel movements (soft) during the day. Her legs get bent up to her tummy and it's obvious she is uncomfortable but i don't know why!! I always try to burp her after each feed and mostly she does burp. She is not like this during the daytime and sleeps well or is awake contentedly after her feeds.

I read that feeding on demand can cause colic but I don't know if it's true!! She doesn't always eat much each time. Sometimes only 30ml! But she does feed often :(

Does anyone know?

Hi,

Sorry this was caught in moderation (as you know) as you mentioned a books author who is banned from discussion on BabyandBump (now edited).

Also bumping hoping someone can help.

ela had colic, it used to start from 6 o clock on the dot every evening and carry on untill about 9.30 ish, sometimes later, she would just cry and cry like she was in pain it was awfull, she would pull her legs up to her chest, arch her back and go all stiff, not alot would comfort her. I used to just have to carry her rocking her and walk with her around the house, which can get quite tiring.

I changed her milk from sma to cow and gate comfort i tried infacol which didnt really help, we had colief for her bottles which didn't help either ( but most people find this a god send) the last thing that we tried was dentinox colic drops they are not very nice and smell horrible but they seemed to work, it was xmas eve and we had people round the house it got to about 7 and i realised ela hadnt had her nightly crying session, and she hasn't had it since xxx hth xxx

E.T.A- gripe water is really good to but lo can only have it from 4 weeks xxx

:( I think it is colic then as sounds exactly like what you describe sara-rose89. We have her on infacol now but I am not sure it is helping much and I think it could actually be getting worse. She now can't seem to get through much of her feed before it kicks in so I have bought some Advent bottles to try. Only given her one feed with them so far and I think it helped her drink more but then she still had a bit of a wind attack and threw up a lot of it. Sigh. I shall now be counting the weeks until she is 4 months so she can be in less pain. Poor wee girl!

It might be colic, but it sounds quite similar to what my LO did at a similar age. Although when he pooed it was 'normal', they weren't all that frequent, and we had all the screaming and straining etc.

We pinpointed it as trapped wind, which you treat in much the same way as constipation. It can make them feel fuller, so they'll feed less too. We started giving a little cool boiled water each day, and it worked wonders - it takes a few days to start working though. Maybe you could have a chat to HV about it? Failing that, an easy digest formula, but I wouldn't switch to that at your stage without talking to HV first.

what formula is she on?

SMA is hard for babies to digest, is that whats shes on?
