Is it ok to make up 6 bottles and keep them at room temp... mix in the powder at feed times and not heat up?

Its what iv been doing for the past two days and it seems to be going ok but im petrified im doing something wrong and LO is going to get ill

xx

Powder should be added to water that's 70 degrees as powder isn't sterile.

My midwife said to do this rather than make bottles in advance and store them in the fridge but I prefer to make them with hot water to kill the bacteria then keep them in the fridge but I only make 3 at a time so that they aren't stored for too long . To be honest I think babies are more resilient than we think and everyone does it differently so I wouldn't worry. If baby was going to be ill it wouldn't have taken this long for symptoms to show.
Good luck. x

I do the same as you - have water ready in bottles and then add powder. I've always done this for my LO and she's always taken room temp feeds, plus is easy if you're out and about

i just checked on cow and gate website (for myself too), the uk site says no to making them in advance and the irish site says u can but keep them in the fridge and use within 24 hrs. im all confused lol. my hv says NO but then she says no to everything (eg. not to bring lo out for until shes 3 wks old). my friend who is a mw says make them up and store in fridge etc.

my sis friend does it this way and all her kids are fine and were never sick. i trust her coz she has 4 kids, eldest is 5 and youngest is 6mths

I've always done it this way with Evie, except I usually heat up the water before adding the powder as she hates room temp bottles lol!

i make the whole bottle up and store in fridge untill needed then just pip in microwave for a few secs to make it not cold but not warm iykwim?x

I don't know about the powder, but when I used formula for my son (almost 8 yrs ago mind you) I would make up enough bottles for 2 days at a time with the luquid (concentrate) and he was fine...? It seems so tricky now :dohh:

Some milks cant be added to water thats 70degrees as it will completely clog up. So I totally query those guidelines.

Eg - This is on the SMA Staydown page

Q2: Why do you have to use chilled water; what about the 70 degree rule?
As SMA Staydown has a precooked corn starch added, it is not possible to make up Staydown with water at 70oC. The Department of Health is aware of this. It is recommended that it is made up using strict hygiene conditions, by practising good handwashing and sterilising techniques, the introduction of bacteria will then be minimised. It is recommended that if possible each feed is made up individually with refrigerated water when required.

I do this. I make up bottles with the water fpr 24hrs and use the little pots that u have to transport milk when out and just pour them in the warmed milk as needed.
Its good for night time coz u then just take up the bottles u need with the pots with the right amount of milk formula in then when bubs wakes for a feed, warm the milk in the bottle warmer, tip the pot of milk in, shake, shake, shake and voila!!!!

this is what i do and my dolly is very happy with it x no tummy upsets, anything :flower:

with my other 4 i used to make up milk for whole day and store it in the fridge which never did them any harm x

all 5 munsters have had milk at room temoerature without heating

i'd say if its working for you then do it like you're doing

I'm looking into possibly using store bought water...which is kept at room temperature ANYWAY, I don't see what difference it makes tbh... If you were mixing the formula in and leaving at room temp then possibly a higher risk for bacterial growth.... The fridge just slows down bacterial growth and if you've added boiled water to sterilised bottles (though we don't sterilise our bottles anyway...) then there is minimal bacteria present in the first place...

this is how i do it...its so confusing isnt it?

my sil did the same and it works for us as ds doesnt mind room temp milk.

i think its better than storing milk in the fridge and easier that making bottles up new.

no matter how you do it there is a risk but you have to find the way that works for you and stick with it!

everyone in my generation had bottles in the fridge pre made. i guess this way the bottle and water are sterile.

i make up 6 bottles first thing in the morning and put them in the fridge and heat them up in the bottle warmer when they are needed.
i have done this since keira was born 5 weeks ago with no problems
