I was round OH dad's last night and he was asking if lo has started crawling yet..i get asked this ALOT by people and my answer is always..no..i dont think he's going to crawl..he hates being on his stomach..i try to put him on it but he'll just roll back onto his back..he has no desire what so ever..i even got him a lamaze spin n explore play mat months ago and he tried to roll on that aswell..so anyway i said no no..i dont think he's going to crawl..think hes going to be more of a bum shuffler as he's started rocking on his bum abit when sitting....and OH's dad said i should MAKE him crawl?

i cant really MAKE him..if he doesnt want to he doesnt want..

anyway he said that its a scientific fact that babies who dont crawl end up dyslexic..?

is this true?

i mean dyslexia isnt anything to be ashamed of and i know it isnt the end of the world but i guess any parent doesnt want there baby to have problems..zach already has health problems so the last thing i need to be thinking about is learning difficulties too..

it just struck a nerve..

so do you think this is true or a myth?

you cant MAKE a baby crawl so theres not alot i can do anyway..

(my lo loves being on his feet, he always wants to stand and sit upright btw.).

:dohh:

I hate how people throw 'science' around to back up there point when its utter bull!!!

My brother crawled then walked at 9 months and is dyslexic...so i think he's talking utter poop rather than science!!!

Some babies just dont crawl and would rather just go full throttle and walk instead...

...seriously, just nod and agree and let him think what he wants!!!

Zach is just fine and developing perfectly!!!

I used to get told all the time that I should MAKE him crawl as the movement is too important for them  how the hell you do that I have no idea!
Anyway he never actually crawled until he learned to walk, then he decided he could crawl to get to places to pull himself up. He was on his feet at about 6m too and walked (with support) from about 9m. Of course I have no idea whether he has dyslexia but if he did I would be VERY shocked if it had anything in the least to do with that!

I have no idea where he has got the "crawling / dyslexia" link but I have never heard this and tbh it sounds like total nonsense to me! Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty and although it can often be alongside dyspraxia (a movement disorder) I have never heard of it being linked at all with crawling / not crawling. Is he thinking of dyspraxia? If so ask him where exactly he has learned this "scientific fact" and to stop trying to frighten you! Also what he expects you to do about it exactly!

he'll do it when he's ready, if he wants to ... if he doesn't, he'll walk instead! Don't worry :hugs:

Hey hun, I've no idea if this is true but I wouldn't worried about your LO not crawling yet as 6 months would be really early. The average age is 8 months.

My nephew only ever really did commando crawling before getting up and walking. He's 14 now and has no problems.

My MIL does this ALL the time.
If he isn't doing something, she asks me if I think it may be an early sign of autism!!
I have started agreeing with her now!

Her: is he crawling yet?
Me: no
MIL: oooh - not crawling! do you think he might be autistic?
Me: yeah - probably.
MIL: o_O

In short, no. You cannot "make" a child dyslexic. Ask him for his research next time he comes out with something so daft. Even if there are links between crawling and dyslexia, correlation does not imply causation.

 How ridiculous!!!

and 6 months is very early anyway. Theyre normally only just sitting up on their own by then.

Take no notice.

My husband never crawled. His mum is always telling us how he was quite content to just sit and play, then one day she just nipped to the toilet and when she got back he had pulled himself upright on the sofa and just started walking.

Dh is definitely not dyslexic.

My OH is dyslexic..... And I know he crawled as a bubba as me and MIL were talking about it the other day!!!

I however went straight to walking at 9 months (never crawled and hated tummy time apparently!)..... I'm not dyslexic at all!!!

As for making a baby crawl........ I don't think so somehow

I really wouldn't worry about your LO. All babies develop at different rates xxxx

:dohh: :dohh:

Don't listen to him hun - I never crawled and I'm certainly not dyslexic. Also my daughter never crawled, but just bum shuffled and I have no concerns about her developmentally. However, like you said, if he does end up being dyslexic then there isn't a lot you can do about it anyway. My best friend is dyslexic and one of the most intelligent people I know - she graduated with 1st Class Honours so it has never held her back

What a load of crap!! Did your FIL actually say that with a straight face?

Tell him its a scientifc fact that he is fool!

Give your little guy a chance, hes only 6 months old. River didnt crawl until 7/8 months and even then she decided it wasnt quick enough for her and was walking at 9 months. Some babies just dont like crawling.

What a load of crap.
The average age of crawling is 9months, i certainly wouldnt be worried while your LO is this young! X

And you cant make a baby do something they are determined not to do!

Angel 6 months is early to be crawling none of either aiden / friends babies crawled til 9 months plus, so i dont think u need fret!!! one of them always hated tummy time but was sitting v stable from 5 months just crawled at 9.5 months from sitting position, aiden didnt even sit properly until 9 months xxx

Duncan Bannatyne, Richard Branson, Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci... never held any of them back either!

We were told this at Baby Sensory a while back! i didn't hear the reasons why as i think its a lot of rubbish but you could call someone there to ask? xx

I believe that a high proportion of people who have dyselxia and dyspraxia didn't crawl. However it most definitely does not follow that all babies who don't crawl go on to be diagnosed with dyslexia or that not crawling causes dyslexia..........I'll try to dig out some research.

A higher proportion of babies are now going on to miss out crawling and that's thought to be down to back sleeping and having less time on their tummies.

6 months is early to crawl- ofcourse there are babies that can but id say 8 or 9 months is the 'average' age. At siz months I wasnt even thinking about it lol. My lo started hands and knees crawling at 9.5 months but before then bum shuffled from about 8 months.
We didnt think she would crawl either as she was pulling up way before she crawled.. Now shes a pro and mixes it between cruising to get around.
Ive never heard that no crawling means they may have learning difficulties, in fact my friends mum told me my friend never crawled and he works for an investment bank in the city he has never had learning problems.
It seems babies that dont crawl seem to walk sooner than babies that crawl.
You have nothing to worry about hun. When people ask inform them that 6 months is very early! xx
