I really hope someone can give me and my partner some advise as we are not sure what to do for the best. We feel we should put DS on HB formula ?

Our DS is 10 1/2 weeks old, weighs 13 pound and is always hungry has been since day 1. :happydance:

He has suffers with constipation so is on Lactulose (laxative ) twice a day, is a very windy baby, has colic and also has reflux so is on Gaviscon.

He is on Dr Browns bottles, with level 4 teat for aggresive feeders as he really is aggresive, used to leave a ring around his mouth where he would suck on the teat so strong.

He is also on Aptamil comfort. Comfort milk and Dr Browns help his wind loads and that dont seem to be to much of a problem, and the Gavison works well too.

Anyway, mentioned to HV he was draining his bottles and wanting to be fed every 2 hours, we are feeding on demand, she mentioned to make the bottle up with an extra ounce of water, so 7 oz bottle, with 1 oz of water=8 oz. This has not helped, it has now been 2 weeks.

He wakes 2/3 times a night for a feed ?? My gut instinct is he needs to go on HB as he is a hungry boy !!

My extra worry is, will it make his constipation or wind or reflux any worse ?? Surely we would just up the laxative, which the doc has said we can do ?? How do i introduce the HB milk, a feed at a time. He currently has around 6/7 feeds in 24 hours. :coffee:

I really need some advise on this, i am a first time mum and just want to do the best for my adorable son. Thank you in advance x

Sorry no advice as we don't have that sort of milk out here in Canada but I would say as always... go with your instincts! With reflux, I find small frequent feeds are best

I just put olivia straight onto hungry baby at about 12 weeks as she seemed to be hungry but when we increased her intake she brought it back up so hungry baby was great as it taked longer for baby to digest. We didn;t do it gradualy we just used the same brand as normal milk (aptamil) Her poo was a bit looser is anything for a day or 2 but no other probs. I have kept her on it until this day x

Oh and i.m not sure anyone would reccommend watering down the formula more? Thats the first time i've ever heard it and against the formula instructions x

if your wanting to switch to HB milk i would do it gradually, also have you thought about switching brands of milk? Aptamil is from what iv heard, the thinnest milk, perhaps try cow and gate? My cousins LO started on Aptamil and it just didnt fill him up (he was on 4oz every 3hrs at a week old), she switched to cow and gate and it worked wonders, filled him up and he dropped the amount of oz he was taking. Sorry if im not making sense, im knackered! X

sorry also, if you do want to try switching brands, cow and gate does a Comfort milk too, it helped my LO with his reflux for a while. And do you add the gaviscon to the feeds yeah? X

We were recommended to water down Abi's bottles due to constipation as it gets her extra water. She was also on lactulose until recently and suffered from a lot of wind, we saw a different doc last time we went and he said that lactulose can cause build ups of gases and to give her watered down prune juice instead, this worked soo much better! She even started having explosions! Which I know isn't great but when you've had a constipated baby for most of her life it's a great milestone lol. And it also helped with the wind problem, she doesnt need it every day either.

I know this doesn't help with the HB formula but might help with the constipation and wind if you do change.

Thanks for all advise. Im going to buy Aptamil hungry baby today and see how that goes. As he has a funny digestive system I will introduce it slowly a feed at a time a day, then increase it. I may buy the cartons just incase he does not get on with it, then a hole tub is not wasted ? What do you think ?

Also I wasnt aware that Aptamil is supposed to be a thinner milk ? that is intresting, so i will see if HB works if not may consider changing to cow and gate ?

In regards to prune juice i will also bare this in mind, how much is it watered down by ?

Thanks again x

You can water down formula for constipation - under HVs advice we added 1oz of water - the issue is adding too much formula to water really.

Yeah, SMA is the thickest then cow and gate is in the middle and Aptamil is the thinnest. I have no idea about Hipp or anything else x

I put a teeny bit of prune juice in one bottle a day keeps her regular!

we switched nicole over to HBF 2 wks ago, she was on 6oz bottles every 2 hrs. it didnt give her constipation but OMG the smell is bad lol, dirty nappies and her wind/farts. she has dropped the amt to 5 oz every 3 hrs but is now waking up twice at nite for bottles, both are 4oz - 5oz bottles.

for a 10 and a half week old, 6 feeds is the norm, as are night feeds, although he does sound like a hungry baby, so just switch it and see what happens rather than worry about it because you dont know the outcome
xxx
