I am just wondering if men with very low sperm counts or volumes (or both) can have this treatment. My bf is going for a SA soon and I have been reading about IUI, seems really good treatment but I am not sure if this would be an option if it turns out he has a low sperm count (I think he does, just got a feeling as he had a right undescending testicle which wasnt operated on until he was 11!!!). Does anybody know if we could use this treatment or not?

Or would it have to be IVF or ICSI which are more expensive and invasive. But I would go through all that just to have a baby at the moment even though Im petrified of being sedated.

Which is the best for success rates. I am 40 and his is 32. I have already had twins naturally at 21 with another man in another past relationship so I know I can have babies.

If he does have a los sperm count I want to go private and start the treatments straight away as my time is running out. I feel young and I am healthy. I dont drink or smoke and my BMI is good and I exercise. Same for my bf.

Can anyone help me? xxx

Hi hun,

There is a minimum number that is required. My DH's count was 1 million/ml and that wasn't even enough for conventional IVF. We had to do ICSI.

From sharedjourney.com:

Is a certain sperm count necessary for IUI?

Although the minimum sperm count necessary to have an IUI performed is one million, it is normally recommended that a sperm count of at least 5 million be used. However, the less sperm that is used, the lower the chances of success. Therefore, a sperm count between 20 and 30 million is usually thought of as ideal.

I wish you success in whatever path you choose. :hugs:

Hello there -
My RE recommends having at least 10 million for an IUI. My dh has low-ish sperm count (8 million) but we still went ahead with the IUI. It didn't work but we're hopeful for next time

Hi Missy Moomoo

The min count thought necessary for an IUI is 5 million motile sperms though the success rate is the highest with over 20 million motiles. Also, woman's age is a important deciding factor in IUI with the highest success rate in below 30, followed by 30-34 and the success rate drops significantly for women over 35. You can discuss the options with ur doc after your bf's SA but i wud think an IVF/ICSI might work better for you. All the best...

Hello RB

Is ur RE referring to 10 million motile (A grade sperms) or 10 million count??

He just said 10 million, but said they used a very "inclusive" wash method, which I took to mean they included almost everything, even the non-motile funny-looking ones!:spermy:

I think you need a count of at least 5 million in order to do IUI.
