I never had one and I dont think its protocall (sp) in the UK unless there is medical grounds.

HTH

xx

i didnt get 1 either til i went into labour and that just to check how far i was dilated

they wont want to, honestly. they might want to doa smear test - but this is a good thing. It's to check your health which is of vital importance right now obviously.

But that isnt so bad - surely you've had one before? It's not my ideal of fun, but it's over quickly.

Don't worry, it's all in your best interests and it's nothing the doc wont have seen a zillion times. try not to worry.
Good luck!

oh thank you,ill keep my fingers crossed that i dont have to have one.
thanks again girls. x x

I asked this in a thread a couple of days ago and it was a unanimous no so I have stopped worrying :happydance:

i had an internal at 8 weeks ( i live in the uk) it was because i was taken to A and E with stomach cramps and they wanted to check everything was ok internally. I know its not a standard procedure. But I just wanted to say that its really not as bad as people think. It may be a little embarassing, but its for the health of your baby and if you have to have it done, just know your doing it for the best possible reasons. So don't worry.

Although now my fiancee keeps going on about how i've been touched up by a woman. ha ha. very mature of him. xx

i dont mind having it done if there is complications but i didnt want it done at my first apointment.

Thats exactly how I felt. If and when it has to be done I want to have met the person a couple of times first, its only polite!!

hee hee, very funny. I'm not sure it works like that, Although if that is the case it would mean I had one night stand with my lady because i didn't even know her name. i think i can be excused because i was in alot of pain at the time, LOl now i feel cheap. Your way sounds better, have a few dinner dates before hand. xx:happydance:

Thats what I thought, dinner, perhaps a film. I like to know who I'm dealing with. Or rather, who's dealing with me!!!

I can´t believe some of you have not had an internal yet! I´ve had two in the last three weeks. I really don´t mind it being done, cos I´d rather find out if something was wrong with me sooner rather than later.

I was discussing this with my Auntie the other day and she was shocked when I told her that over here, its normal to have a smear test every 6 months instead of every 3 years in the UK. Yeah OK, I hated it at first, but was told I would not be prescribed the pill unless I had a smear test - it p`ed me off at the time, but I´ve got used to it now, its not really that much of a big deal especially if preventative rather than curative measures can be taken as a result of a regular smear.

In the US smears are annual for women who are sexually active, and biannually for those who are not.

Smears are also protocol for the initial OB appointment. They check for cervical health, STD's etc. There is also a blood panel taken at that time to determine your blood type and Rh factor, and check maternal health.

I imagine I'll have another internal at the next appointment to check cervical health as I didn't have one at my 13 week appointment.

I think it gets more often as you approach due date, as they want to note effacement and dilation if any is happening.

I agree, it's not the funnest thing ever, but I tolerate it so my medical professional has the information he needs to make decisions aobut me and my baby.
