I am pondering about whether or not I should tell the person interviewing me that I am pregnant or not. They might not be able to tell since they don't know me.... but if they can see that I am showing I don't want them to think I am lying.

Should I see how the interview is going and then tell them or wait and see if I get offered the position and then tell them? I currently have a crappy job but I would hate to leave my job for the new one to have them find some reason to fire me because I am pregnant. ( I know they cannot legally fire me but some places will find any little reason to fire you if they want you gone). Then I will have no job, at least if I do tell them up front and I don't hear back I will still have my current position....

Any thoughts?

If you change your job now, wont you lose your SMP and only get MA instead?

I probably wouldn't day anything, I have been honest at an interview and didn't get the job, I really believe my honesty was my downfall, however they would never have admitted discrimination and I couldn't prove it

I would tell them if/when you get a written offer, and if they withdraw you have a case to sue them, but you haven't given your notice, so you have 2 options.

Good luck x

Thank you for your response. What is SMP and MA?

I totally know what you mean. I just worry because I had a friend who was hired and found out the day she was hired that she was pregnant and when she told her employer they fired her a few weeks later for "not answering the phone fast enough". Maybe the reason was true but to me it sounded like a load of bull just finding any little think to can her.

Only downfall is Michigan is at will employment so, the employer can fire you at any given time for any reason (obviously they can lie about the reason and if you can't prove discrimination...) Just would hate to end up with no job lol!

The SMP and MA that PP refers to are maternity payments in the UK. I don't know how that side of things works where you are. If it's obvious that you're expecting, then I don't see how you could get away without mentioning it tbh :flower:

id tell them to be honest. id rather someone hire me for me and knowing im pregnant rather than getting off on the wrong foot cos u never told them before

LOL i was naughty and didnt tell them, i was i think 17 weeks pregnant, i held out until i was 24 until i told them x

I've conducted interviews and would rather you not tell me. We're not allowed to take it into consideration and you telling me just means I have to try to ignore what you said. At least if your company does things the right way,
They're supposed to not consider it.

Btw we hired someone this year around 6 months pregnant and no biggie. She did her maternity leave and everyone was supportive.

I had an interview at 24 weeks and didn't tell them. In my opinion it was really obvious that I was pregnant (plus I had to stand up and give a presentation in front of them) but they said after that they didn't know. I was made redundant and really needed the job, they offered it me and I took it, although as I said they stated that they didn't know I was pregnant.

From doing some reading before a lot of employers were saying that they didn't want to know because it can make them judge you unfairly or if you don't get the job, it can look like that's the reason why.

Good luck xx
