can you only claim JSA if you have been sacked from your job?
 
If you quit, however, you have to wait a period before you can claim, I believe its something like 12 weeks, but someone can correct me...Hence if you are sacked/made redundant you can claim right away.
 
Hi yes you can claim it anytime you are unemployed. If you have walked out or quit your job, they will have to look into the claim and this could delay it slightly but not by 12 weeks lol. I know because i have walked out of a job before and then gone straight in to make a claim for JSA. I had to write it all down giving valid reasons why i left my employment.
 
Actually, I was wrong, its up to 26 weeks

'People leaving work are treated as having made themselves voluntarily unemployed. This applies if you resign, walk out or are sacked for misconduct. It doesn't apply to redundancy, end of contracts or on medical grounds (which can include workplace stress), or where you can show good cause (e.g. unfair dismissal).

Otherwise you are automatically classed as voluntarily unemployed. Unless you can disprove it, you face a sanction of up to 26 weeks without any benefit at all. Your case is referred to an Adjudication Officer who decides if it's fair and, if so, how long the sanction applies for. They will write to your employers for their side of the story. During this period you will be on no benefit, or reduced benefit in cases of hardship'

The things the PP said are right but there are ways to get around it... When DH and i went on JSA, i was working but i had a massive argument with my boss (he stole money from me) and i said send me my P45 so he did. When we made the claim i said to the job centre i was refused any more work. But not sacked because i wasnt. I left voluntarily but worded it in such a way that i was forced to leave.
