Hi guys

I'm not sure if anyone has has a similar experience... If you have I'd really love to hear your story!

Last week my hubby and I went for our 35 week scan. (At every scan our ob/gyn does a 4D scan of our baby's face for us). At this scan there was a lot of shadowing across our baby's nose and lips, and the doctor proceded to tell us that we not going to get clear photos due to the shadowing. To me at the appointment it just looked like our baby was running out of space and his little nose and lips are squashed up against the placenta, which was what was possibly causing the shadowing. Then yesterday I overheard my hubby telling a friend of ours that to him in looks like our baby has cleft lip... I was horrified to hear him say this because it hadn't even crossed my mind.(Well I kind of thought if that was a mere possibility that our doctor would have mentioned it). So I anxiously went back and looked at all the scan photos again and it really does look like my hubby could possibly be right. I'm really worried now... And anxious for our next scan to raise the subject with or doctor.

I was just wondering though, whether there is anyone else out there that has had this experience? Whether there is anyone who also had a lot of shadowing in later scans? Or thought the same but was relieved to find out baby was fine or visa versa? Please, any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks everyone... =)

Theres a shadow on my scan on my babys lip and i questioned it but the sonogropheur would of noticed so a know he hasnt got one an am sure your lil one hasnt too hun other wise they would of definatly noticed x

I did not have a 4D scan. However, at normal scan, my dr actually pointed to me that my baby's upper lip has closed, and that was as early as 20weeks. I would think dr could have picked it up earlier if it is a cleft. So please do not worry yet, hun. You may bring it up to your dr when you see him next.

Try not to worry. Like Nadialew my 21 week scan included a check of the babies top lip and we were told it was perfectly formed. I would assume that they would have picked up on any problems during your earlier scans? Good luck! :flower:

They usually check for clept lip and pallet at the 20 week scan hunnie...its part of there major checks...if your dr hasnt mentioned it to you at all then im sure its nothing to worry about, they arnt allowed to not tell you if they have those kinds of findings...hugs hun xx

Hey,
I had the same thing happen recently. Last week at our 34 week scan, there was loads of shadows on baby's face. I've got 2 pics and in both, it definitely looks like a cleft lip. DH was the first to notice, but ever since I keep looking at it and worrying. However, as everyone says, if it was checked for at the 20 week scan, then maybe it's just the shadows after all?...

I would not worry. Your husband isn't a doctor. Doctors and ultrasound techs are very qualified at diagnosing defects by ultrasound. If the doctor didn't notice anything irregular that was obvious to a "normal" person, he wouldn't be a very good doctor. If he's been otherwise attentive, don't give it another thought :)

My 4D scan looked like a cleft lip/pallet but when the sonographer moved around a bit it looked normal again. The shadowing makes it look like that sometimes and can catch you off guard! Im sure it would have been noted and you would have been told if they noticed anything :)
