Just a thought. Don't forget to buy and pack...

omg I'm sorry I "killed the thread" when there are numerous other posts talking about how cloth is better than disposable diapers. All I said was that there are new studies showing there is no difference. I was not rude, I was not mean, I did not say anything wrong. If you want to take it that way, so be it, but I also started with how much I loved these things as well. I was just trying to point out that the OP did not ask opinions on the cloth vs reusable, etc, just that she liked a certain product, and that the thread was getting off track. Take it as you want, but I was not in any way starting any problems. And I'm not going to argue with someone who takes my post out of context or too far and ruin the OP thread.

There has been much debate over the impact of disposable diapers and cloth diapers on the environment. The pro-disposable diaper advocates say that the extra water used to wash cloth diapers is just as much of an abuse to the environment as the production and disposal of disposable diapers. But taking into consideration the following estimates you will probably agree that disposable diapers are much more harmful to the environment than cloth diapers.

It is estimated that roughly 5 million tons of untreated waste and a total of 2 billion tons of urine, feces, plastic and paper are added to landfills annually. It takes around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers for American babies alone. Although some disposables are said to be biodegradable; in order for these diapers to decompose, they must be exposed to air (oxygen) and sun. Since this is highly unlikely, it can take several hundred years for the decomposition of disposables to take place, with some of the plastic material never decomposing.

The untreated waste placed in landfills by dirty disposable diapers is also a possible danger to contaminating ground water. Pro-disposable advocates say that cleaning cloth diapers uses more energy and contributes to the load on sanitary sewer systems and potential water pollution. This view really makes no sense if you think about it. The amount of water used per week to wash cloth diapers at home is about the same amount consumed by an adult flushing the toilet four or five times daily for a week. Also, the greater amount of water and energy being used by diaper service companies to wash large amounts of cloth diapers multiple times; the per diaper impact on energy and water supplies is actually less than home washing.

Finally, when flushing solids from a cloth diaper down the toilet and washing the diapers in a washing machine, the contaminated, dirty water from both toilet and washing machine go into the sewer systems where they are properly treated at wastewater plants. This treated wastewater is much more environmentally friendly than dumping untreated soiled disposable diapers into a landfill.

So the botton line is cloth diapers are better choice, considering the environment.

As for the OP, since I am planning to use the cloth nappies, I would be using nappy sack which is washable and re-usable.

Would love to hear from someone who has used cloth right from birth, to give suggestions on how they dealt with it. Would be interesting to know for some of us new cloth diapering Moms :)

You only said what I was thinking I also think there were a few arsey comments regarding nappies and nappy sacks I wanted to comment that this thread wasn't even about nappies so why bring up the debate that re-usables are better than disposables ect ect... I wasn't going to say anything cos I didnt want to cause an argument but I don't like how ur being bashed for making a very simple comment!! Xx

So we can't go off on tangents any more? That would be really sad. Perhaps I'm being hormonal and short tempered, and for that I apologise, it's close to D day and I'm short on patience. I just felt like you were saying that we couldn't even bring up anything else in a thread where people had already talked about the impact of nappy bags; normal, spoken discussions veer all over the place. I'm sorry if I've peed you off, Ashley. I didn't mean to cause offence.

Thank you - I didn't realize it would turn into such a mess just for making a little comment. I wasn't the only one who said anything...

Yes at the same time I posted mine, so I didn't see it. Thank you for the apology. I just felt the thread was going in a judgemental direction to the OP and it didn't seem fair to them.

Well I wish I hadn't posted now. lol

I actually posted to be helpful as I had a baby magazine through the door and in it had a list of must haves for your hospital bag and what to pack abd what not to pack and the nappy sacks were on the must haves and it reminded me so I thought I would post.

I really don't care about cloth nappies I wouldnt have posted about nappy bags if i wanted to discuss cloth nappys lol

This was my thought exactly lol thank u for the 'original' thread :) x

This thread has taught me that whatever our decisions are on what we use - at least we are all thinking about the environment one way or another - even if it is just to try a bit is better than nothing xxxxx

I haven't seen anyone being judgemental. It just looked to me that op likes bags and perhaps others thought maybe she didn't realise there was an environmental impact of adding bags to nappies.

And some studies on cloth may be accurate, the manufacturing and finishing of some fabrics do cause harm due to the chemicals and processes and cotton is a huge one. Since reading and studying more about cloth, I have started buying organic fabrics and hemp which are more environmentally friendly. That is a lot of websites

oh dear, anyway thanks Louisex for the original post, i had forgotten my bags but they are all packed and ready to go! good luck in what ever you all decide to use!

Well I had my shopping delivered and some of you will be happy to know that they sent 4 bags of biodegradable nappy sacks lol xxx

Wow, the amount of pages on nappy bags...these forums do amuse me at times :)
