I've just got home from hospital today after having emergency laparoscopy and salpingectomy (fallopian tube removal) for an ectopic pregnancy....

up until saturday night it was thought I was having a miscarriage, however, hcg levels were not dropping significantly and internal scans showed nothing in the uterus (or that anything had ever been there!)

I was getting mild cramps across uterus, but had been complaining of a sciatica type pain in my right bum cheek which the doc did not think was inextricably linked to a possible ectopic but he wasn't going to take a chance so decided to put me on the list for surgery.

So it turned out it was ectopic, was around 3.5cm big out of my right tube which has now been removed......

the doc seemed to think that my remaining fallopian tube would service both remaining ovaries, and therefore my fertility is not reduced - anyone heard of this?

also, I wasnt treated with mex, so am wondering when i can start trying again really.... have had some conflicting advice.....

I don't have any experience with ectopics but just wanted to say sorry for your loss. I hope someone else can help with your questions.

Yes I've heard of it happening. Basically the two ovaries aren't actually attached to the Fallopian tubes they just sit next to the ends of them. When you ovulate the egg could come out at any part of the ovarie circumference and your Fallopian tube will send out signals to the egg in order to get it to move in its direction and into the tube. If you only have one tube it will send out this signal no matter which ovarie ovulates, and pull the egg towards it. Very clever really. Yes you could try straight away but it's always advised to give your body, and of course your mind, a wee while to heal properly first. I'd wait a month at least- most docs reccomend 3 months. But it's up to you xxx

And also I forgot to say but I'm really sorry for your loss. It's a very hard thing to go through xxx

Hi there, I had my tube removed at the end of June 2012 and was told as no drugs we could try whenever we felt ready, we decided not go try but not to prevent, I had one cycle 6 weeks after op then in August I was pregnant! This one in the right place and doing well. I was worried about a repeat ectopic but the dr said it is usually only slight increase in chance if your tube is damaged but left in as it were. Hugs for you as you are going through so much but stay positive xxxx

I experienced an ectopic last February. Fortunately they caught it before surgery was necessary so I was treated with methotrexate. My doctor advised DH and I to wait for at least 3 cycles before trying again. The reasoning behind this was to allow my hCG levels to drop to 0. Then I was put on prenatals for two months before we tried. Thankfully we were able to get pregnant the first cycle we tried. Now I'm just waiting for my miracle baby to arrive.
This is a horrible thing to go through. I will keep you in my prayers. If you ever need to talk, vent or rant feel free to message me. I hope that you have the same success I did.

Sorry for your loss <3

I had the same procedure done in April 2011. (Right tube removed also)
My doctor recommended I wait up to 3 months after the surgery to try again.
I conceived again 6 months after the surgery

Fx for a quick recovery for you xxxxxx :flower:

I had surgery in june 2012 and had my ectopic cut out of my tube so they saved my tube somehow!
i waited 2 full cycles before trying again and fell pregnant straight away, sadly that ended in miscarriage as did the next pregnancy straight after but this was not due to my ectopic i was just unfortunate!

Im so sorry its such a hard thing to go through, wishing you all the best for the future!

hiya x had my op yesterday too ... bet your feeling bit sore too x I was told by the docs that it does not decrease chances and they have know pregnancies where they have ovulated from the ovary without the tube x
