Instead of looking directly at hospitals for work experience, what about volunteering for your local LLL or NCT to get some related experience in mothers and babies.

I know our NCT group is always crying out for volunteers.

Hi Hun, What college are you planning to go to? I'm currently doing the access to nursing course at Sutton Coldfield and doing midwifery at uni. I haven't managed to get any work experience yet but I have 4 uni interviews and still waiting to hear from the last one. Although I have got some experience at womens hospital set up and my community midwife has said I can shadow her for a few days-just have to wait for the time to be available as they have a lot of people requesting it. have you tried nct, sure start etc? Also sign up to studentmidwife.net if you haven't already, its fantastic with so much advice etc :) xx

Have you had some-one look over the letters/emails your sending? I understand this is a forum and most of us are typing one handed from a phone but there are numerous spelling and grammar mistakes in your post which if replicated in these communications could put people off.

I'm not trying to be harsh only trying to help. If you wanted to post your covering letter I'd be happy to look over as I'm sure others would!

I have managed to get a place in birmingham womens hospital as a volunteer to work on the maternity ward ..... looking back at my post there was a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes I think I just got carried away whilst typing lol.. I'm terrible for doing it:dohh:... but the letter's I sent where all checked out before sending and my perseverance has paid off :)... I have an assessment on the 5th of feb at collage to see where I am with math's, English, writing e.t.c and if I'm not up to scratch they will work with me regarding this as I will be writing a lot of essay's hehe .... I didn't find your comment/post harsh at all I take any advice on board so thanks :flower:.... xx

Not sure where you are in Birmingham, but Birmingham Central branch would like volunteers?

I'm glad it was taken in the supportive way it was intended as I know how tough the job market is currently both for paid work and voluntary! Good luck! X

I did some work experience in palliative care, care homes, in a primary school...all of these have transferrable skills :) as I was 18 when I was in college and nobody wanted me at that age in maternity or nursing. I think non-NHS places are easier to get experience in. Feels like ages ago now...I qualify soon! Good luck chick, I can answer any of your questions about the course, though I'm not at Birmingham xx
