this is my 20 month olds thumb. it got smashed in a door by my sister in law while she was watching him about a month ago. needless to say, i was upset. but all that aside, it has since turned this ugly brown color and a few minutes ago he ripped it half off. don't know if you can tell where in the picture, but it is hanging on by about half of the nail. i don't know what to do? let it stay till it comes off the rest of the way? is it supposed to tear off like that, or was that an accident? clip it off (ewww)? i don't know. thanks for looking.

Ouch! it it bothering him? I would probably trim it so it doesnt catch on anything and get ripped off and maybe put a plaster over it

Im not really sure hun :dohh: but i think ur suppose to leave it to fall off on its own but dont cover it up as it needs air around it

he doesn't act like it is. he cried for a second when he did it, then made me kiss it. and immediately started to pick at it. which looks painful, but he didn't act like it was but i also think he would have ripped it off if it hadn't hurt.

Yeah it will fall off on its own and a new one will grow back ..but for now put a plaster on it to keep anything out

Good point about letting air get to it, I'm plaster happy!! but will need to be careful that it doesnt get dirty.

thanks guys. plaster means a band aid right? i think i will. that will let it fall off instead of him getting it caught on something.

if its bothering him or not healing i'd take him to a docs, then kick your sil for not watching him more carefully...

hope its better soon

I'd plaster it, as sam said, so it doesn't get ripped off, because that would hurt like crazy.

I can still remember a little when my brother was baby sitting me - and he was being mean and wouldn't talk to me and the situation excalated and ended with me accidently dropping a chair on my foot (I cant remember why I was carrying the chair) and it landed with one leg on my big toe - over the following months my big toe nail when brown, then a really gross purpley black, and then it dropped off and there was a brand neew clean nail underneath.... so.... be prepared for it to turn black!

Oh... I feel sorry for my brother...

COVER IT! when I was 10 I had a bit of rough nail, it got on something and the whole, and I mean whole nail ripped clean off, I can still remember the pain, while its rough keep it covered, a bandage would be best I think, I would personally get it looked at

hi lovely. i have just trained as a nail technician and i have been told that you should cut off any bits that could get caught and tear the nail further - gently though. keep it clean and where possible dry otherwise nail infections could happen. just wash with antibacterial and it will be fine, honest.

The nail wll grow bac fine but will probably alwas hve a ridge growth will take ages as the nail starts growing about a cm up from the nail bed on an adult so in the equivelent place on a child.

ouch is all i can say, that is one brave little baby, you should be very proud

Personally, i would get someone to have a look at it.

Even if its not bothering your little man, there mite me a small infection, but in the meantime i would keep it covered.

V xxxxx

i would clip the bit that hanging off (then fine it maybe so it's smooth )so it won't catch on anything and might rip the nail off because that will hurt. poor thing !
I did that when my nail was coming off (accident too)
