me and oh have 2 cats and we have had loads of people saying you cant have cants in the house with a newborn baby!

we have had soo much grief over it that i am really nervous over it

so are you keeping your cat ?

if yes what precautions are you doing? are you gonna buy the cot nets and stuff ?

We are most definatly keeping our cat. We will just make sure that doors are closed in the nursery etc. And we will probably buy the nets but the cat will never be allowed alone with the baby ever. Going to also buy baby gates for when baby is older so they can't get to where litter trays, food bowls etc are x x x

I have two cats as well, that are also my family. Everyone has their opinions but cats aren't any different to keep around as any other animals people have. I would never leave him unsupervised around any animal and as long as their not around them without someone watching, whats the problem? Even if thats not realistic, cats are very independent creatures most of the time. They'll more then likely not even be interested in an infant after you initially bring them into your home. They will probably be more "put off" by how loud they can be. lol

I think this depends on how rambunctious your particular cats are. I have one and she's generally pretty mellow. Likes to sleep a lot.

We will be buying a mesh netting drape for over the bassinet and later the net canopy for a crib. I'm betting this, along with a stern voice will teach her. (she doesn't like my stern voice, hehe)

I'm sorry people have been freaking you out. Cats and newborns have safely shared homes for thousands of years, there really is no need to panic and get rid of your pet. I don't know about you but I have never once heard a news story about a cat smothering an infant. It's an old wives' tale.

I'll absolutely b keeping my cats. I'm not so worried about my older cat as she spends most of her time outside and only comes in to sleep and eat downstairs.

The young cat, who is very much the baby will def b staying too. We will need to watch her as she'd sleep in cot or moses basket with baby given half the chance! He he. We'll b using stair gates, she wont b able to climb over those and nets over cot and moses basket.

Other than at night when we're all sleeping, i'm not overly concerned about my beautiful cats x

As you can tell from the name....my older cat is Sabrina (who is 11) and her daughter, Daphne is 10; and we will be keeping them without a doubt.

I spoke to my vet and he suggested that we keep the cats in another room at night, but if we're around the day, no need to 'separate'; my little cat sleeps on my bed, so the nights my DH has the baby, the cats can sleep with me; when the baby is with me, then the door will be closed and no kitties in the room. As for the myths, they are simply myths and we know that the big momma cat will probably not be too bothered by a baby (and we have friends with a cat, who have shown us pictures the cat being used by their toddler as a pillow); the little one Daphne is very territorial and we will monitor her, but I think there shouldn't be any problems as long as you use common sense.

If you're really worried, pls speak to your vet. When I was in college, my brother adopted a cat from a shelter that had been brought in after the family had a baby; that cat was the gentlest, sweetest and most personable cat I have ever met, so it was our benefit that they gave him away, but pls. talk to your vet, before you decide to get rid of your furry friends.

best wishes

Definitely keeping my furry baby! Not only is he a member of the family but he is a really relaxing distraction which I am sure will be welcomed when lo arrives. Just got to be sensible with it around baby as others have said

I am keeping my cat! I wouldn't dare consider getting rid of her, as we have had her since she was 6 weeks old and she is over 1 year now. I have raised her like a baby lol. I am not worried about her hurting the baby, the worse she will do is hiss at you, and bat you with her paw (She is very nice about it and does not use her claws), we are already getting her ready for the baby so she does not freak out as much.....

I have started wearing baby lotion to get her use to the smell
playing with her while listening to baby sounds on youtube.

When we get the nursery ready we are going to start playing with her in the nursery and getting her use to the baby furniture and such. We are military and PCSing to Korea so she is going with us. <3

I think it's terrible how many pets you see in rescues/freeads etc because of babies :(
Don't listen to people trying to scare you, as long as you use common sense then I don't see the problem.

thanks girls, was so scared i was gonna have to give up my fury babies lol

where can i get the nets from?

I raised my two babies (now 5 and 6) with two cats in the house. I never had any problem, the cats didn't bother them. And now my kids can carry the cats around like babies and they never even scratch.

We now have three cats, and are expecting our third kid. Unless someone is allergic to cats, I really don't see any reason why you would need to give them away. They are sweet animals and who love lay around and snuggle.

i will most definately be keeping my fur baby - i didnt even think about getting rid of her when i got pregnant. she sleeps downstairs at night with no problems, and we sleep upstairs. and throughout the day I will be keeping my eye out but i dont foresee any problems - although i am worried my little pampered princess will feel left out when a new princess enters the household! x

We have two cats and they are our first babies ! We would never give them up, just because we are having twins ! Many of our friends think we are going to have problems with them, but they are the sweetest cats you could ever meet ! We are hoping that each twin will pick a cat that they like the best !
We will be getting cat nets to go over the cribs and they will be either outside or asleep on our bed !

Of course I'm keeping my cat (and dog)! They're part of the family, too!
The doors to the bedrooms are kept shut already and our cat isn't allowed in. I have no worries about my cat - she's pretty skittish around loud noises or people she doesn't know and will just go hide in the formal living room (which is basically "her" room as we rarely use it). She's also one of the sweetest, gentlest cats I've ever known. I also can't imagine her climbing in and laying on top of the baby...she's very particular about where she lays down or sleeps.
We won't be getting any nets or anything - I'm not going to have my cat watch my baby, so they won't be alone in the same room together!

i have kept mine,, all i do is put gloves when i handle the littler box, and my midwife says i can only get toxoplasmosis by direct contact to his ,, 'feces',,
i got tested for it and i was negative and never had it but i have had cats since i was born, and kissed them and slept next to them, and i never had it ,, shows you how rare it is ;)
just dont feed your cat raw meat and if it is an outside cat then make sure you wear gloves when cleaning the litter,, or get someone to do it ;)
good luck

I have two kids and when both were born I had two cats. I have never had a problem with the cats and the babies. Since then, one cat has died, so we are down to one. And, we'll be keeping him when this little one arrives as well. Try not to worry too much about it, the cats mostly keep to themselves after the initial meeting. :)

People really pee me off who get rid of pets just because a child comes along.

We have a cat and a staffie, we will be keeping both. We will be doing nothing different, as by having a baby around will be a big enough change for them. They are both extremely well behaved, the staffie is 3 and is incredibly timid around children, yet playful around adults.

Our cat is quite old, however still wants full roam of the place. He will be allowed everywhere he was allowed before, just obviously not on anything of babys. Cat's and dogs can be very easily trained, there's no need to buy things to block them out.

I'll be keeping my cats. Pets are a life long commitment. I'll just have to keep them out of my bedroom on a night!
