Ladies with PCOS one for you.

I thought i was having an ectopic pregnancy, so i rang NHS direct and they said with my symptoms i was having really bad abdominal pain and back ache on the left hand side, and i was dizzy, i didnt want to make a fuss, so i rang the hospital and they said to go down, so at midnight last night in pain, i went to the a&e. I got there and they gave me a gown to put on, i had a urine sample and was told there was blood in my urine, blood pressure was taken and it was 'low' and my sats were high which i thought was normal. A nurse came along and felt my stomach and asked some questions and said he didnt think it was an ectopic pregnancy and it could be cysts on my ovaries, am i right in thinking this is PCOS? If so, how did i get it, what is it, can i prevent it? Sorry im a bit clueless, tia x

No one really knows how you get it. It can be genetic and there are many forms of PCOS from simple cysts on ovaries and that is the only symptom or to inability to lose weight, sugar resistance, irregular period and not ovulating which is the form I have.
Blood tests can tell for sure if you have PCOS. I was diagnosed back when i was 16.

Unfortunetly there is not way of prevention, but there are ways of managing it. I was offically dx last August, but have been suffing w/ it for many years. One of the things that can help is going on a low carb diet. It's acutally helped me start ovulating again, well that and taking metfomin twice a day.

Are you doing better now?

I am also on the low carb and metformin twice a day. The doc has said I have ovulated. I wouldn't know since I dont BBT or use OPK (I have them but the last time I used them I kept getting positive ovulation results for a week).
I am looking forward to losing my final 15 pounds so I can ease up slightly on the low carb. I miss french fries and drinking wine more than once a week.

I was just diagnosed with PCOS last month and TTC. I suspected pregnancy but turned out to be PCOS. I'm on metformin but doc only put me on one dose a day. Want to take more cos SICK of waiting for a bubby. Love to keep in touch and hear from any cysters (PCOS sisters) who have had babies happily!

I got referred to consulant as me and OH had been trying unsuccessfully for a baby for 3+ years..... Eventually got diagnosed with PCOS - I was so annoyed with doctors as had been many times over the years regarding the inability to lose weight and irregular periods.... The consultant advised he would perform ovarian drilling to remove some of the cysts.... The morning I was due to get this done - I was all ready to go down for Op only to be told I was pregnant..... I nearly fell off my chair - Had convinced myself it would never happen to me....
Just thought I would share to give you ladies some hope... It can happen.....

my doctor just sent me for ultrasound and blood work, and im thinking because of my symptoms i may also have that, so im in the same boat as you, dont really know much about it

When I was first diagnosed 10 years ago, I didn't realize how many other women were affected by it. As the years have passed, I know lots of other women who have pcos.

I have heard statistics saying 5-10% of women have it. There are varying degrees of pcos and not everyone has the same symptoms. Mine were inability to lose weight and irregular periods. I then found out I had insulin resistance pcos

PCOS can not only be diagnosed by a blood test. PCOS is a syndrome, meaning it's made up of many medical issues such as irregular periods, problems losing weight, insulin resistance, cystic acne, anovulatory cycles, hot flashes, growing excessive hair all over, and so on. I was diagnosed at age 15. I had perfect blood work. My doctor just knew I had it because I was 200lbs at age 15...I had an ultrasound done and my ovaries were covered and clustered with cysts. All my levels are still perfect blood wise, but my last ultrasound showed I had a cyst on my right ovary.
It varies from person to person and the best thing you can do is educate yourself on it so you know what's going on and what questions to ask.
Also PCOS is reversible. That's one thing to know. I have reversed mine once before, but now I am working on doing it again. PCOS also tends to run in families...just wanted to add my 2 cents.

hi i was told i had pcos in feb and told to lose weight was put on metformin and have lost a stone i have concived 3 times without any help but they have all become angels before 10 weeks me and my hubby have just started ttc again so fingers crossed good luck to us all xx
