Laproscopy?

Hi there,

Just thought I would share my story in case it helps...

Im 36 and DB is 42. we've been ttc #1 for 2 years now, and NTNP for about 6 months before that. I have never had a BFP.

I have had blood tests, HSG and vaginal scan (dildo cam!) at the same time while awake, 3 months of clomid 50mg, and on 13th december I had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy at the same time under general anesthetic.

I have never had cysts or anything like that and when I started clomid i was scanned after the first course to see if the follicles were forming ok and my lining was alright and that all came back fine. So am def unexplained.

I had been told at the start of the journey that a lap was an option and i declined as I too thought it was invasive considering I had no symptoms and nothing wrong. I pinned my hopes on clomid as my mum had the same problems as me and eventually had both my brother and I after a course of clomid. Alas that never worked so I eventually thought we may as well rule everything out. I have heard that even people that don't have symptoms can end up finding endo during the lap. So we went for it.

I was terrified. I've had general before for tonsils and wisdom teeth when I was much younger and I was fine, but I was terrified. I don't now of what.... fear of the unknown and how sore i'd be after and being alone without my partner.

I was of course fine... i was second into the theater after an hour delay as the doc was stuck in traffic!!! the nurse looking after me was lovely.... it all happened really fast.... they came to call me, i walked in, jumped on the bed, they confirmed my name etc and within seconds 2 people had my left hand getting the cannula(?) in for the anesthetic while someone else stuck things on my chest and then they said i'd start feeling woozy and then a mask was on my face and they told me to breathe normally and that was it... the whole thing took less than 3 mins i swear.

i woke up and all i remember was a little boy crying for his mommy and thinking poor little thing.... they were trying to calm him and the first thing i said to the nurse was is he ok? and then can i have my glasses (i'm blind as a bat!). i felt fine, just really sleepy.... but by the time they wheeled me back to my bay the fog was clearing and i got my glasses and a glass of water. i was able to sit up and was being really careful but i really wasn't sore at all. they give you enough for the pain and something to stop you feeling ill so i was fine. after a while i was given tea and was texting DB.

i arrived there at 7.45 was in theatre by 10.15 and home by 2pm. yes you feel tender that first day and you have to be careful as it is surgery but on the whole it was ten times better than i expected. we are tough cookies us women! I only had one little hole like where a thick needle had gone through below my bikini line, and 2 stitches in my navel but right in the creases so you cant even see it now).

my results came back clear except for a small 3cm fibroid on the uterus that isnt protruding into the cavity at all..... and a small bit of endo.... both she said werent worth removing as they werent likely to be causing any interference.

im glad i had it... its like a process of elimination... if i never had it id always be wondering if there was anything in there the doctors had missed. its really not as invasive as it seems...

one bit of advice I can give you is about the pain from the gas in your chest. that night after i got home and went to bed i really battled to get comfy. the pains in my diaphragm and shoulder were really hassling me and I have since been advised by a friend of mine (who has had countless surgery for endo, cysts and all sorts) that the best way to stop it hurting is by propping yourself up with pillows, preferably a v-pillow as it supports your arms on either side of you and props you semi upright. that stops the gas moving around under your ribs and you can actually get a decent night sleep.

So next step for me is on weds when we see the consultant again to discuss the surgery and talk about the next step. we've already discussed IUI and if that doesnt work then IVF. So im kinda excited as im getting to my wits end a bit... I really hope this works!!

Sorry for the essay ladies - hope it helps settle some of your nerves!!

Good luck to all of you still TTC....
