I thought people would be interested to hear about the latest study on SIDS that has shown breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS by up to 50%

Damn, well I guess since I formula feed im going to have a constantly sick baby who is going to die from SIDS.

 Sorry I dont like reading posts like that because its one of those things that makes people who CANT bf for whatever reason feel like they are harming their baby. I know my baby is perfectly healthy and happy on formula, but some people who wanted to bf and couldn't will feel that much more guilty reading crap like that.

:saywhat:

Fine. That's the last time I try to share useful information on this forum.

Lighten up, Ryder! :D

Thank you, Shifter! That is great news.

Hi Shifter, thanks for sharing the link! Off to have a read now :) Ooo I noticed you're planning a hypnobirth? I did the course too and thought it was fab! Cant recommend it enough!

Ryder - I can totally understand your view, there is soooo much guilt experienced with being a mum, and none more so than our choice of how we feed our babies! I wish the medical profession were a bit more 'pro choice' about bf & ff, new mums have enough to cope with! I give Gracie one, sometimes two ff a day and I feel bad even though I know I bloomin well shouldn't! Maybe we should start a 'why guilt should be banned' thread here!!!

Research also states that a dummy can help reduce SIDS, but no matter how much I tried, my LO kept spitting hers out! Little minx.:dohh: There is always some research or other going on to make us mummys try knew things 'just in case'!

xxx

This isnt "new" news though... lol... I believe that its even been posted on here before... Im tired of people trying to shove down everyones throats how much better bfing is. People have a right to make a choice.

Theres waaay too many factors that play into SIDS, other then bfing.

I would need a better explaination as to how exactly bfing prevents SIDS to make it a valid factor.

Indeed it is an interesting article, BF, FF, dummy or no dummy, anything that can reduce the risk of SIDS is of course great and will be of comfort to many thousands of women across the world.

I have to say in Ryders defence, this comment must really make FF mummies feel good

The combined analysis indicated that bottle-fed infants were twice as likely to die from SIDS

lol ya freya there should be a ban guilt thread started! All during my pregnancy and once Jasmine was born there was so much pressure from family and co-workers to bf.. in all honesty, that kind of force is likely one reason I stopped, it was way too stressful having everyone shoving it down my throat.

I'm with Ryder on this one. I dont usually post about my choice of feeding Chloe, its my business, but theres so much about that makes me feel guilty that I FF Chloe as early on as I did, I felt bad enough that I couldnt do it as it was.

Fact is, she is healthy, happy only been ill once in 7 months.

If I'd continued to BF she may have had a reduced risk of SIDS  she probably wouldnt have had a mummy though. FACT!

I understand where everyone is coming from on this. I breastfed for two weeks and i hated every single second of it if im honest, it made me miserable, depressed,I felt trapped etc etc and i struggled with it and to top it off I was totally unsupported whilst in hospital. It is thrown in your face that breast is best etc etc but in some cases I totally agree my baby is so hungry that I think I would of certainly struggled to fill him where as now hes happy and full on formula and his mum is happy. In my opinion thats better than him been hungry with a mum who is suffering from PND.
On the other hand to ladies who breastfeed, well done!

To be honest, this makes me happy. Caitlyn won't take a dummy and I'm constantly worried that she is going to die of SIDS and that it'll be because I didn't give her a dummy soon enough.

Toria... as said, there are a wide range of factors that reduce SIDS... its not simply one thing. Jasmine rarely uses her dummy too... does it mean shes going to die from sids? nope!

SIDS is something that is more common with babies that are in poor environments, around smoking parents, thir mum smoked while pregnant, or they already have an existing breathing problem. Regardless of wether they are bf or have a dummy...

Same goes for infants becomming sick. Its a wide range of environmental factors that is more important then wether the baby was bf or not.

Okayy I had pre-eclampsia & was so severely swollen that I couldn't breast feed, even tried to relactate....and my baby is twice as likely to die because I couldn't? Nonsense.

Oh for god sake. No one reacts like this when people post info about dummies reducing SIDS even though loads of people choose not to use them. It's just info.

If you don't like it don't read it!

We have a right to respond to things, as do you. I meant the research in general, not that it was posted. They're always coming up with stuff when really nobody knows the truth.

I don't think it's anymore nonsense than room temp, or dummies.

That was my thought. So calld guidelines change so quickly that, at the end of the day, I dont think theres anyone in the world who can say they know more than anyone else!!! The truth about SIDS: nobody knows IMO

Agreeeeeeeed

I can see both sides, Ive never smoked, never drank in pregnancy, never had my babys room too warm, i gave her a dummy AND i breastfed- and yet she still died, slbeit not to Cot Death, although that was what was suspected (post mortem proved otherwise)

However, i still blamed myself- did i not notice something was wrong, was it that one glass of wine i had for my birthday when pregnant etc. But least i can look back and know i did everything possible for her, and gave her the best start if life.

Not preaching there either, as my other 2 children were bottle fed.

I WILL be breastfeeding again this time round, but when that lady who promotes it comes round the maternity ward trying to encourage it- i will be telling her where to go.

Thank you for posting the link, I think ANY advice or information can only be good, and helps mums and mums to be make informed choices...and if it saves just 1 babies life, then it is worth it :hugs:xxxxx

You know what ... even if your BF, give your baby a dummy, dont smoke, dont do this and dont do that your baby is STILL at risk of SIDS. We're all in the same boat at the end of the day whatever choices we make regarding our babies
