Leo has been slow to start talking but seems to finally be in the "low average" range and is adding words to his vocabulary. His words together with signing make for relatively effective communication. Recently, he's even started adding some color words to his vocabulary! He has said (in his own way):

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Blue

Orange has been in his vocabulary for a while because of the fruit, but yellow, red, and blue are new. Not only is he starting to say these words, but he's starting to use them correctly. He has correctly identified these colors independently. I'm not saying he's 100% reliable with it, but he does know it on some level and is adding the words to his spoken vocabulary. He's also very interested in learning colors and is actively working on it. It's pretty awesome!

Hm... This is interesting. I have no idea how often I say a noun before the color rather than the color before the noun. I know that sometimes Leo will be pointing to things and it appears that he wants to hear the color rather than the object. An example of this is when he has a stack of duplo and he's pointing to different ones. Or if there are two duplo people with different colored hats. There are other times when he'll point to things that he's really familiar with or he'll start pointing to different parts of something that are different colors and I'll tell him the colors. I feel like I haven't necessarily pointed out colors as a quality, but have more responded to Leo noticing colors and inquiring about them.

Interesting article!

I don't think I talk about colours much at all. I'm still very much teaching functional words that help ds be less frustrated. Frustration is a big issue right now! But this is a really practical idea for when that time comes. And it's so logical... I can completely see how it helps.
