well after many false starts and getting very fed up and frustrated, my boy arrived exactly one week late at 18.50 on the 30/12/11 the day before his big sisters birthday (nearly ten years to the day) he weighed 8lb 3 and a half oz.
i thought i had gone into labour the evening before starting at 7pm as i was having rather painful contractions in my back mostly, 5 minutes apart until 6am the next morning but they all stopped and left me pretty fed up as it had happened on several occasions. but i plodded on as midwife was coming to do a sweep that day.
she arrived around 10am and said my cervix was 3cm and very favourable and she told me she rarely said this but she thinks i will definitely go into labour today, she also said leo was back to back which made a lot of sense as i had been getting a lot of back pain....throughout the day my contractions started back up at 5 mins but i had a bloody show. somehow i knew this was it.
i went about my day taking time on all fours to get him shifted to the right position and gradually my contractions got stronger, about 4 o clock i got my mum to take me to macdonalds as i was starving, contractions were quite painful and 3 mins apart....the drive seemed to relieve the pain somewhat though.
we got home and the contractions cranked up a notch making it difficult to to focus on anything else, i had a massive show at 5pm and my mum decided i should go into hospital.
we got to hospital and they placed us all in a birth pool suite. me, my partner, my mum and sister.
everything was very relaxed and i was examined to be told i was 5 cm and i could go into the pool if i liked.
i hopped in and we had a good laugh in between contractions which were getting quite intense, i managed to keep my cool tho, especially with my mum and sister chucking the birth ball into the pool and shouting beach party! they were being really silly which had a brill calming effect and made the labour experience very managable. my partner was rubbing my shoulders in between contractions also and remained very calm throughout.
the contractions cracked up another level just after i got into the pool, coming every minute or 2 and by this point i was needing gas and air to get thru them. at this point i knew it wouldn't be long but was still very relaxed and laughing and joking in between contractions, mainly because my mum was pretending to be a really hippyfied doula and saying "does that hurt? GOOD! you put me through this 25 years ago" lovely woman my mother is lol!
my waters were still intact at this point until i had one massive contraction at 18.45 and then POP - they went! i tried to motion to the midwife but i instantly felt the overwhelming urge to push, i closed my eyes, bit down on the gas and air mouth piece and pushed, i forgot how intense it was but my gosh it was empowering! 1st push delivered Leo's head! 2nd push and he was out. all within 5 minutes of my waters breaking. they placed him straight on my chest and it took me a minute to come round as it all happened so fast and i was disorientated from the gas.
i got out of the pool to deliver the placenta and checked to see if i needed stitches which i didnt and was told if baby had 2 feeds, i did a wee and went into the bath i could go home..... and at 9.30 pm we were home! leo was introduced to his big sister and uncle who had been waiting impatiently for us to arrive.
overall it was a pretty easy labour and the staff were brilliant. leo is doing great and is extremely placid and content.
