What is your little one's oxygen story (in NICU)? I am curious. My 26 weeker was ventilated for a couple hours after his birth, before being switched to high flow. When he was 27 weeks, he got pooped out on the HF so was put on the nasal cannula ventilator for about 2 weeks, before being switched back onto high flow. He was on high flow until he was 33 weeks, when he was taken completely of all oxygen. That lasted 3 days before he went back on it (at 1, then .5 liter). He's been back on it for 3 days, and they are probably going to be taking him off again tomorrow (34 weeks).

What's your little one's story?

My 29 weeker was on CPAP for a few weeks. Started off with a bit of oxygen and she was lowered to just room air within a few days. They said she needed that extra "puff" of air.

I have no idea what people mean when they say high flow, 1, .5 etc. The CPAP machine that Aimee was on had numbers. She started out on 7, then they lowered it to 6 and then down to 5. They said 5 was the lowest it could go and it was just room air.

I hope everything goes good when they take your lo off oxygen. :) It took my daughter 3 tries before she was completely off CPAP.

Reese was a 23 1/2 weeker. Was on the ventilator for almost 7 weeks, c-pap for about 3 weeks, high flow for 2 and then low flow. She came home from the NICU on .5 low flow, which was dropped to .3 after a few months. At the beginning of July, her doctor asked us to try her off the oxygen during the day. I have been driving her into town 3 times a week to have her O2 levels checked and I thought she was doing fine. A respiratory therapist came out today to assess her and she was in a foul little mood and was uncooperative:). Unfortunately, the reading he finally got (took awhile as she kept kicking off the probe) was 85% so now she has to wear the O2 all day long again until we get back to see her doctor... I'm so disappointed.

Those CPAP numbers represent how much pressure they're getting. High flow delivers a certain amount of liters in "flow." That's why high flow is less invasive than CPAP. The liter numbers (2, 1, .5) are how much liters of flow they get a minute. If they're on 4 or 5 liters, they might as well be on CPAP.

Yeah! Once they took him off oxygen, they put him in a crib. I think it was too much at once for him. We're trying again today.

Vent for the first few days, CPAP for weeks and weeks and then weaned onto nasual cannula for the last few weeks. (cant remember the specifics now, we were there 11.5weeks in total)
She managed to come off that in time for going home but there was talk of us going home on it at one point.

She was put on the vent again after her laser eye surgery 5 weeks later. i found that difficult to see because she was bigger and meant to be stronger. She was off it within hours though

Thanks for explaining. My daughter was only ever on CPAP so I never learned about this.

Vent for 15 hours, CPAP for I think 6-7 weeks and then weaned off on to high flow for about a week then low flow for a few hours before nothing.

My son came home on oxygen. He has a very long background story and he is still quite poorly. He has been diagnosed with Chronic Lung Disease and recent had his care transferred to a hospital in London-we are going for tests today.

needless to say, right now I don't really want to go into his background etc as I fear ill start blubbing before his appointment! But I'm happy to answer any questions about coming home on oxygen if I can. Good Luck xx

Thanks for the responses ladies! He was taken off all oxygen again on August 9th, and he's been off ever since, and satting really well. :)
