Our precious Lila Nicole was born at 7.28pm on 27th April, and has already made life even better than we had it before. The amount of love I have for my family doubled overnight, and I feel unbelievably lucky to have my two gorgeous girls in my life.
A little bit of background, I already have one beautiful girl, Paige Sophia, who is 21 months old. Paige was born in a hurry, 1 hour 40 minutes from my first pain to her being out. This is her story "Paige's birth" I had been really worried about how fast this labour would be, how I’d get to hospital and how we’d get Paige looked after if she was at home. I had tried to have as much cover as I could possibly ask family to do, but it all happened at a point that we had no help on hand, typical!
With Lila, I got to 9 days overdue, and had my one and only sweep booked with my midwife, Alison, for 2:30pm. I was examined and found to be 4cm, stretching to 5cm, and had my sweep. It wasn't too painful, just uncomfortable. I had my show during the sweep (exactly the same as with Paige). After the sweep I had tightenings that were totally random, sometimes five minutes apart, sometimes twenty minutes apart, but definitely not painful in any way. With Paige, I didn't go into labour until four days after my sweep and had the same tightenings so I didn't think much of it, and just carried on with my day.
I had my first contraction at 6:12pm, it felt like a period pain, nothing too painful, but I knew this was definitely the start of it all, so I told Mark. We waited until the second one before he called his mum to tell her we needed her to come to our house to look after Paige. The contractions were only about 3-4 minutes apart, so I called the hospital to let them know I wanted to come in. The midwife told me that I should wait at home a bit longer to see what happened, even though I’d explained how fast my last labour was. I told her I’d be more comfortable if I came in, so our plan was to wait for Marks mum and then drive in. MIL (who doesn’t drive) then called back and said she’d not been able to get in touch with FIL, who was at the gym, and couldn’t get a taxi for 30 minutes, so Mark called our friends who live one street away to see if they could come and watch Paige until MIL arrived, luckily they were in and were fine to come and help.
After having contractions for about 20 minutes (6-7 contractions) I was now was doubled over with the pain, needing to moan through them and I started to feel like I could push. I went to the loo and there was quite a bit of blood so Mark decided we shouldn’t risk driving in ourselves and called an ambulance as we’d been advised to by Alison, so he got on the phone to them. He had Paige in his arms as she was getting quite distressed with me being in pain, and part way through his call with the emergency services, she very helpfully grabbed the phone off him and hung up on them!! He called back and thankfully they’d already dispatched the ambulance and it was expected in 10 minutes. The dispatcher asked Mark to check if the baby was crowning or if he could see the umbilical cord, so he had to do that, and he couldn’t so we were just waiting for the ambulance and our friends to arrive.
Our friends turned up and Mark passed over Paige and came to look after me, I was on all fours in our front room, trying to smother my moaning into a pillow! The ambulance arrived at 6:45pm and I was checked to see if the baby was crowning, and again it wasn’t so I was moved into the ambulance, where I got to lie down on a bed and use the gas and air. Luckily MIL arrived as we were leaving so I was relieved that Paige was going to be ok now. We had the blue lights and sirens on, and got to the hospital at 7:00pm.
I was wheeled off the ambulance and taken into the birthing centre. By this point my contractions were only about a minute apart. With Paige the contractions were on top of each other, so it was a relief to have a short break between them this time. The midwives first checked my heart rate and blood pressure between contractions, then tried to hear baby’s heart. My midwife tried between two contractions but she couldn’t find it, but on the third attempt she managed to find it, baby was so far into the birth canal that she wasn’t looking far enough down (I think they thought I was going to be nowhere near delivering given how recently my pains had started!). Mark later told me that she had asked the second midwife to go and get the doctor after the second try, I’m so glad I hadn’t heard that as I would have totally panicked. So once she’d managed to check that baby was ok, she eventually (although it was probably only about 10 minutes!) examined me and told me that I was fully dilated and that I could start to push whenever I wanted. With my first push they could see the baby, second push baby was crowning, third push and the head was out, still with the waters intact, and fourth push I delivered the baby! The pushing was over in 8 minutes, crazy! My waters went when I delivered the feet, Mark said that the midwives stood well back when I was delivering to avoid getting soaked! I remember that the pain when I was pushing was so much more intense than last time, I tore internally this time, so maybe that was why.
We asked what we had, and my midwife told Mark to have a look, and he announced we had a girl. I was over the moon to have another beautiful little girl. She had a mass of dark hair, the total opposite to Paige’s blonde hair. She was totally clean when she came out, with being born in her waters, and she was put straight on my chest. We did delayed cord clamping, and once they’d done that, Mark cut the cord and I had the injection to speed up delivery of the placenta. I tried to breastfeed straight away and she took to it really well, the little star!
My labour was classed as 1 hour 8 minutes. I’m sure it would have been an awful lot shorter if I’d known earlier that I was fully dilated, I think I will probably have been 10cm while at home given I was getting the urge to push then. So weird that I can get so far dilated without any pain at all.
I needed to be stitched for my second degree tear, and after that Mark headed home to pick up the car. He came back and we both stayed in the hospital room that night. After a few checks on Lila (hearing etc) in the morning we were free to go home, introduce Lila to Paige and start our life as a foursome.
Paige has taken to Lila so well, she is besotted with her, constantly giving her kisses and cuddles, and wanting her to sit on her knee. It is the most special thing to watch. I love my girls more than anything, they are my world.
