Our little Lillian Faye (Lily) was born on August 2nd, 2012 at 1:08 p.m. by way of induction. My labor/birth was actually quite enjoyable and not at all like I expected it would be.
We knew we would be inducing about a week before it happened, so that gave us time to prepare for her arrival. If we have any more kids, I'm hoping to have a similar experience. It was nice knowing exactly when she would be coming.
We had to be there at 5:30 in the morning to begin the induction. After paperwork (which only took a couple of minutes) we were shown to our birth suite, which was quite nice, very homey. The nurse had to ask me tons of questions and take my vitals, etc. Then, she did the enema, which actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Soon after that, I got my bloody show and they began the Pitocin drop at around 7:30. I started having contractions almost immediately. They weren't too bad in the beginning. At 7:45, my doctor came in and broke my water, which was quite an interesting sensation.
Within a couple of hours, though, I was in a ton of pain
but had dilated to two cm. The contractions were getting incredibly rough but I just squeezed my DH's hand and tried to think about what the end result would be. They went ahead and gave me the epidural so that the nurse could stretch me without me having to feel it. Getting the epidural did not hurt but having contractions while he was putting the needle in was not pleasant at all.
Once the epidural started working, though, I was in heaven
I could not feel a thing below the waste and the nurse was able to stretch me to 4 cm. By noon, I had already progressed to 7 cm. And then, almost an hour later, she checked me and said, "Okay, you're there. Are you ready to have a baby?" I was astounded that everything had happened so quickly.
My DH and mom were instructed to each take one of my legs while I pushed. Pushing was actually quite enjoyable. I loved the feeling of getting closer and closer to meeting my little girl. At one point before the doctor got there, Lily's hair was actually already visible and the nurse was playing with it! It was amazing.
Lily was born at 1:08 p.m. at 7 lb, 13 oz. She was 18 1/2 inches long. Our induction was not for medical reasons, but it was a good thing I was induced because the cord was wrapped around her neck when she was born. However, once they got the oxygen on her, she immediately turned pink.
We stayed in the hospital for two days and aside from not getting sleep for 40 hours, it was an enjoyable experience as well. I'm not sure we want any more children, but if we do have more, I hope that those births are just as enjoyable
My doctor actually said for the next one, we may have to check in the night before because Lily came so quickly (ha ha!)
