I don't know why I feel so hurt by this, maybe it's hormones, who knows.

So my son is 3 and I put him to bed at 7pm, he can watch a few DVDs in bed until 9 (he used to fall asleep way before 9 anyways)
But since my dad passed away, my son isn't falling to sleep so well. He will still be up till 10/11! Playing around in his room, or making excuses for me to go in there (I need a wee etc)

So I was talking about this to my mum this morning and she said "what time does he go to bed?" And I said "7"
Mum "oh 7!!! I've never put any of you kids to bed at 7, your bedtime was 8, and you'd always be asleep by 9. Try putting him to bed at 8"
Me "how will that make a difference"
Mum "he'll be in a routine"

Really annoyed me. Like I don't already have my son in a routine. Or like I'm really cruel for putting him to bed at 7!

My kids are 5&3 and go up to bed at 7,'play for 30 minutes and then into bed. Recently though they are often awake till 9ish chatting to one another.

Don't let her comments get to you, it's really not worth it!

Not at all!!! Both my kids are in bed by 7pm every. Single. Night. My parents say the same they think I'm crazy... I have a 4 and 2 year old and they are champion sleepers because of their routine and consistent early bedtime. Last night we were out and they got to Bed by 830pm and this morning my 4 year old is a monster lol. So I know my kids need their sleep. My 4 year old is allowed her iPad to bed when there's no school the next day like on weekends. On weekdays she is allowed books instead which is very relaxing. I notice that with her iPad she can watch movies until 10pm so I only allow that on weekends so then she sleeps in. However bedtime doesn't change! Latest we go up is 730. My 2 year old if she misses her nap it's 645pm bedtime! None of my kids wake up before 730-8 am the next morning :) you're doing a great job! Xx

Sorry to crash this thread but I'm also having our third girl!!!! Isn't it lovely! Can't wait! 3 daughters, what a blessing :cloud9:

Thank you both for the reassurance. My boy rarely gets up before 7:30/8, so he must need the sleep.
Now I just need to tackle getting him to actually fall asleep. My dad's passing has had more effects on my son's life than I thought it would.

Just wanted to say sorry to hear about your dad. Prayers to you and your family. <3

My kids go to bed at 7:30 every night. Occasionally 7 if they aren't behaving or act like they need more sleep as they don't nap. I think your routine sounds absolutely reasonable. Parents definitely have different ways of doing things.. My mom used to tell me similar things and I just told her I know my kids and they need this even if they don't always realize it. I'm so sorry about your dad :hugs:

My little guy aged 2 goes to bed for 7pm as well, and on a good day he'll fall asleep during his bedtime story. He wakes around 8-9am. Can't imagine moving his time for a couple of years. Only thing to try and do during a disruption is to stick with his routine.

Thank you everyone. I feel much better now. It's strange how we need confidence and reassurance from other mum's, just to know that we're actually doing this ok X

Lol! Mums and their two cents worth hey :)
Mine go to bed around 8pm and its story and sleep and they normally just go right to sleep. Its still day light here at 7pm so ive got no chance lol
If 7pm is his bed time then thats your choice. I did find the older my kids got they got a later bedtime to suit their needs.
My hubbies mum used to put them to bed at 6:30pm well into high school years

Oh my goodness! Poor hubby haha.
I will make his bedtime later once he gets a bit older. It actually used to be 8pm but he started to fall asleep on the sofa at 7, so that's why I moved it. X
