Local anaesthetic at dentists in second trimester safe?

Hi everyone I live in england

I have a filling from when I was younger that is starting to come away..Im now 21 weeks pregnant and for the last few months the dentist had given me a medicated toothpaste to keep the pain under control until I was in my second trimester.The pain is getting worse again and he says he can do a local anaesthetic so that he can drill my tooth and replace the filling properly.He says its safe and there is no evidence that the anaesthetic passes over to the placenta but Im still terrified of having it done.Has anyone else had this done during pregnancy or know of anyone?I cant enjoy the pregnancy with the pain but im so scared of treatment at the same time.Any advice would be much appreciated xx

I am a dental nurse and we routinely use anaesthetics on patients without worry.

I would happily have treatment done and obviously i am pregnant too!

The anaesthetic comes out of your system within a couple of hours xxx

I have been trying to find this out too & get mixed answers! I am due to have local anaesthetic to remove what docs think is an exploded taste bud from the tip of my tongue in a few weeks! I'm considering cancelling till after baby is born as it's not painful or anything! Will ask my midwife next time wat she reckons!

I had all of my dental work done once I hit my 2nd trimester. I needed a ton of fillings. I went for 4 one hour sessions and got it all done. Wasn't bad at all. I know here they require a signed consent form from your OB okaying them to work on you and what meds can and cannot be used.

oh thats fantastic thankyou so much and so great that your a dental nurse!I just couldnt work out how the anaesthetic didnt pass to the baby but is that because they are working on such a small area too? thankyou so much again and also how gorgeous is your scan photo! xx

i had 3 fillings in my first trimester, they said there are a few different choices in the injection they can give, so to warn them so they give you the right one :/ and they xrayed my jaws aswell, that was before i was aware i was pregnant though :/

My midwife wont loet me have a filling, she said you cant have NHS mercury fillings whilst pregnant. When I asked it wasnt a "well, it should be ok" it was an outright "NO" from her. She was shocked I had been told by the dentist I could have it done....wondering why now.....

I saw the dentist for a check up at 8 weeks and he told me quite strictly, no work whilst pregnant due to anaesthetic. I need a tooth out and he wont do till after Xmas.

Hi there, we just got dental insurance after not having it for 6 years and needless to say, I needed 4 fillings (2 were replacements of damaged fillings) that they could see without x-rays. My dentist wouldn't do any x-rays, but she was more than willing to do the fillings, I just had to break them up into 1-hour appointments and get my OB's approval. I guess there are different types of anesthetics they can use and she chose the one that's safest for pregnancy and used the minimum dosage. My dentist explained that leaving the teeth the way they were is worse for my health (and the baby) than having them fixed.

PS -- I had all amalgam (silver mercury) fillings because they were in my back teeth and the dentist said that they pre-mix the filling and that makes the mercury pretty much harmless because it's bound to other metals BEFORE it goes in your mouth.

**EDIT** Both the OB and the dentist said I could only have dental work done in the 2nd trimester.

I am a dental hygienist, and where I live we give local anesthetic. It is perfectly safe to use, and we suggest dental care in the 2nd trimester as it is easier on the mother as well (to get comfortable, etc.)

and as far as the mercury goes - once the filling sets, which is within seconds in your mouth, no more is released at all. So there is very minimal release of mercury in your system, if any, and you get more mercury from other things such as food and your water, etc

thank you so much everyone feel much better about it all,I was going to ask about the whole filling mercury thing as my dentist said he only did white ones but im assuming either are fine then...cant wait for this pain to go its gone to my ear as well

I had a filling replaced when I was about 22 weeks in my last pregnancy. It was cracked and the tooth underneath was affected, so even though it was mercury, out it came. She replaced it with a white composite filling. The local anaesthetic was fine. Well, not fine, but it didn't affect LO.

The anaesthetic they just used one that was ok in pregnancy i was told absolutely no mercury fillings during pregnancy by midwife as well as dentist i paid £60 for my white filling

i had a free checkup, scale and polish and consultation for filling was free but he said a white filling is "cosmetic" so i had to pay £60... he wanted me to have a free temporary cap then a filling in a year or so but a mercury one which i just don't want any silver fillings (this was my first)

did they not class yours as cosmetic if they were white? xx

ive had 3 fillings whilst in 2nd tri (last 3 weeks) my dentist knows whats best i needed one done for sure! my filling i had as a teenager cracked! but the rest he done after all he knows what he is doing and would put me at risk im sure he deals with pregnant people daily so knows what is and isnt ok

Hi Ashley! I'm a dental hygienist also with local anesthesia capabilities

ITA with that is safe, and we do give LA to patients in their 2nd trimester.

And it's true it's worse to leave these things as is, if they absoutely need to be done of course.

There are different types of LA you can ask for the one without epinephrine (elevates your BP). I would just talk to your doctor on your options as well.

Nope, mine was all done free Hun. My check up, scale and polish and 2 White fillings, that's why I was a bit shocked to see you has paid for yours xxxx
